Can you applique After quilting?

I do not have much experience in applique yet, at all.
I would like to add some appliques to a quilt that has already been quilted. Maybe using a hand stitch would make it do-able?

If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

You betchya!
Applique is simply attaching a form to a fabric base (in quilting). It will look nice to see the picture on top of the quilting - - added interest. <wave>
and, of course you would do it by hand. Just make sure that your attaching stitches don't go all the way through to the back. It may be a quilt police problem ... but, there is no need to do it clear through all the layers <wave.>

I don't see why not.

I think it looks beautiful sitting on top of the quilting :D:D:D

Sure. I'd use a fusable like steam a seam 2. Cut out your design. Iron them on and sew by hand a blanket stitch around them. It will add to your quilt.

I too am interested in this thread. I have an "hourglass and ninepatch" top that I want to quilt and then add applique flowers and vines around the border.

it's not necessary to use steam a seam or any fusible if your turning it under

lots of embellishments are added to quilts after they are quilted and bound, including applique  go for it and have fun with it! :-D

Needleturn applique is beautiful when done on an already quilted piece..

The last quilt I did, I used the applique and quilted through all the layers and used it as an additional quilting. I think, as long as you know the back will look different, it can be really pretty.
I don't have any experience with hand stitching, but I assume that would work.

This is what the back of mine looked like after I appliqued a cross and 18 hearts onto the quilt.

I am working on Dance of the Dragonflies. Plan to quilt the entire background first, lay the dragonflies on it, then raw edge them down with a straight stitch.

This is the pattern.

One time I bought pre quilted fabric in a light green and Appliqued a basket of flowers on it for above my dry sink. Put the usual binding on it. I tried not to go through the back.

I have hand quilted 2 queen/king size quilts, then needle turned all my applique after all the quilting was finished.
