Can you help me construct this border please?
I am probably over-thinking this. Are these just strips sewn together and then cut on the diagonal? I think this cold weather is giving me brain freeze!

First I want to say that is a pretty quilt. I had not seen that layout before. Yes , I would make strip sets and cut on the angle. Offset each strip so you don't lose much on the first cut

very lovely layout and boarder. Love the holly in the corners. Nice job.

It looks like a French braid pattern to me.

I don't know how it was made. There are cornerstone type squares on the end of each of the strips so I dont think you can just sew strips together and then cut on an angle.
Okay, I just went a looked at french braid and that's what it looks like to me, too. |
I think it's made like the free runner pattern from Quiltbug. http://phoebemoon.com/Patterns/tabletopper.htm
You add a block to one end of the strip for the braid before you sew them together. You'd not use the block in the center of the table topper - just sew all strips and then cut the size you want. Quilts Galore has easy directions for a braided border. You could add the little squares and then make it wider by using longer strips. |
So....I would make a French braid, and then cut down each side of the center blocks? Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

I did something like this on my sons quilt - I did not use cornerstones however you could easily do that.
I have included a couple of pictures here showing what the finished border looked like and how I put together the strips to get my desired look. I chose to make a really long unit but you could make it shorter and use longer strips. |
