Can you help me figure out how to make this? I see the 9 patch, and the granny squares, but how are they put together?

The little squares are part of a 4-patch. Does that help? Everything is set on point, so tilting your head while you look at it may help.

I see that, but I wonder how to make it into blocks...it seems that because the granny squares are weird shaped, that they don't easily fit as blocks. I can see how to make this if I lay it out row by row, but that seems pretty tedious.

I really like the look of chains and this makes the simple granny square look fantastic.

OK, I didn't see your marks on the quilt at first. Instead of the 5x5 granny square, look at it as a 3x3 (just the center all dark portion. Then there is sashing between the two blocks. The sashing consists of 4-patches for the cornerstones (part of the chain) and the part that goes to the sides and top/bottom of the blocks is light-dark-light.

Here's two pictures - the first is just the sashings - the second has the blocks inserted.

It looks like an 8 patch repeat. The 9 patches are 3 so that really messes everything up. This is what I came up with as 2 repeating 4X4 patches, but I think it would be easier to lay it out on a design board.

I may be wrong but I think this quilt is sewn like strips in a Bargello. You might want to see if there are any short cuts on a quilt design called Boston Commons. This design is similar because it has squares set on point looking like a Trip Around the World. Good Luck !!

I had thought of Duncan's layout and that works with the sashing. Good Job using you EQ program !!! Hope you are keeping warm up in Oregon !!

There doesn't seem to be an easy way out on this. You pretty much
have to layout everything and sew it by rows or do it the way dunster
described.
