These 2 tutorials are pretty easy lattice type designs. You could just use a solid or blender background instead of the prints shown:

I'm so excited, mindless! I've sent this link to my friend. I'm waiting to hear from her- I think she'll love it. I'm one that needs an actual pattern to follow when I'm making it for someone else (would try my own design if it were for me) so I'm thrilled you posted this! Thanks, too, everyone for your response. I'll be trying to do my own thing like many suggested when I make myself one.:-)

Sylvia Pippen has a great bamboo design for sashiko which can also be used for applique or quilting. Not sure I can attach a link but will try.
