Can You Help Me Identify This Pattern?

1 Attachment(s)
Can you help me identify the pattern (Star Quilt) on the front of this book? If it is in a book or an individual pattern, I want to make large quilt not a wall hanging.

I can't identify the pattern but I did find the book on Amazon for less than $4.00!

The book may not have the pattern but should list the name of the pattern on the credits page. Someone may have the book to check for you.

Thank-you BellaBoo....indeed this is not a pattern book, a book on color theory only and indeed maybe someone has the book and it will identify the quilt pattern. I appreciate your time in repy.

Don't know the pattern, but it looks like it is made from half square triangles. You may be able to draft it out on paper. Even though it has lots of fabrics in it, the pattern can be thought of as a two-color quilt. Color 1 is the lights and Color 2 is the darks.

Once you've sketched out the pattern on paper, just pick a square size that would make it be the size you're wanting.

NanaCsews2 04-18-2012 07:16 AM

Never done one, but isn't this a Lone Star, with the colored blocks arranged to distinguish the dark outlines against the light? I just went on EQ7 and I came up with the same colorworks just by taking a Lone Star block and coloring it according to your picture. Sure looks the same to me....

I think someone posted a picture of this quilt a year or two ago, try searching for it here on the picture forum.

Yup they did here
http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...ar-t92871.html

THe poster drafted it up herself and put instructions in the thread. She called it Exploding star. It is nothing but scrappy HST and would be fairly easy to draft. I tried googling a pattern for Exploding star and couldnt' find one, but I know there is an actual pattern out there. Personally, I would get the graph paper or someone with EQ and draft it up myself.

did a little more research. A pattern for it can be found in this book:

I think it is called an Exploding Star. A clerk at our local Singer store had hers displayed on one of the machines. I feel in love with the pattern and she said it was from a magazine and would look it up for me. She couldn't find it so I went and took pictures and drew it out on graph paper. Then about a year ago someone had posted a picture and hers was hanging in the background. When people asked about the one on the wall she said it was called an Exploding Star so I finally had a name for my quilt.

Well I guess I'm very challenged when it comes to drafting on paper....I've looked at the very poor picture I posted...can't see how to draft it...But I did look at the Expolding Star example...I guess I would need to have someone with EQ help me out.

Exploding Star by Teajuana Mahone?

quiltstringz 04-18-2012 07:37 AM

The Quilt was called Exploding Star and was in a book (I believe) Scrap Quilting Made Easy by Sue Harvey. It was published by House of White Birches but I believe it is no longer in print. The quilt is all half quare triangles and a bunch of them. I started this about 10 years ago and never finished it but have all of the triangles made and most of the blocks put together. I found it recently but am still searching for my book - if you can't find it let me know, I am going to look over at my mother's this weekend.

I updated my post with a source for you. Posting again

Additionally if you go to the other link I provided on the QB on about page 7 or so the poster put up instructions on how to draft it yourself.

I have the quilting color magic E-book. Its on sale right now from www.clotilde.com for $1.95
But no patterns are in the book. Only close-up pics of the quilts
The quilt is called Exploding Star by Sue Harvey, Scrap Quilting Made Easy

CoyoteQuilts 04-18-2012 08:20 PM

I really like this one, but I always love stars!

maryellen2u 04-18-2012 09:49 PM

The quilt is called exploding star. It is in the book Scrap Quilting Made Easy edited by Sandra Hatch from House of White Birches. I've got all my 2.5 inch pieces cut, I just have to sew them together to make this masterpiece. God knows when I will get that accomplished! Isn't it gorgeous!?

maryellen2u 04-18-2012 10:00 PM

If the book is out of print, can I post the directions etc. on this board and not violate any copyright laws? I would be happy to do that since I own the book. (bought and paid for with my hard earned cash!) lol

Chay 04-19-2012 04:47 AM

I"m just lurking on this thread but you guys are fantastic in your ability to research and answer questions! It's like the Quilting Board Detective Agency. So generous in your replies - what a great group!

The book may be out of print but is still available new and used. The amazon link I posted had it used for less than $2

This pattern is called Exploding Star... It is in the book Scrap quilting Made Easy. It is made from Half Square triangles. I made this in 2001, after winning a basket of fat quarters the year before at the quilt show.
I remember making all the half square and then having to square them all up before sewing. (fairly new quilter at that time) this is only about 45 inches square... but using larger half square would make it bigger.

LOVE LOVE THE QUILT.

Aurora 04-19-2012 05:55 AM

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I bought "Scrap Quilting Made Easy" last year for this quilt pattern and forgot I had the pattern until today. It is 2 1/2-inch squares, but I am thinking that it would be a great use for all the 3 1/2-inch squares I have been saving. This is a great book as it contains lots of scrap piecing patterns -- well worth the price.

jaciqltznok 04-19-2012 06:08 AM

great links..thanks so much for finding them all! and thus creating yet another IDEA for my little head..heheheh

onaemtnest 04-19-2012 07:56 AM

Thank-you EVERYONE for your input to my request! So generous of time and research for finding this pattern. Several of you have responded with PM and I appreciate all that has been done.

I'm just like Chay in her response that no matter the question it seems that so many jump at the chance to help another quilter!

The HST quilt Exploding Star does not look quite the same to me as the one on the front of that book, which is made with 60 degree triangles. I had to greatly enlarge my screen to see that, but it's definitely not HSTs. It's a similar effect, but not exactly. I don't have the pattern, but it looks as if it would work a lot like the HST designs that are called value quilts, where you start by pairing the lighter and darker triangles and then just keep arranging them until you get the design you want. I'm sure it would be a lot more challenging with the 60 degree angles than with HSTs. The Exploding Star design is different in that it has a lot of all dark and all light squares included that are not pieced with triangles. Both designs are pretty.

dorismae904 04-19-2012 12:47 PM

dsmith is correct. It is the Exploding Star. The pattern is in a book from House of White Birches called Scrap Quilting Made Easy. The displayed quilt in the book is 45 1/2 by 45 1/2 square using blocks that finish 1 5/8. To make a larger size, use larger blocks.

teacherbailey 04-19-2012 03:55 PM

I know I have the pattern or book somewhere since I made one of these "back in the day"....probably in the early 90's. I use it---unquilted---as a wallhanging in my sewing room since I like it that much. I never bothered quilting it because it was one of my first projects and.....I started making vast quantities of UFO's immediately!!!! If you don't find the pattern let me know and I will look for you. Just PM me.

harvsstuff 04-19-2012 04:00 PM

I love this quilt and have bookmarked it for future use. Thanks for posting the link.

I've seen a log cabin style as well.

seahug 04-20-2012 05:18 PM

Hi I have this pattern and it is called Exploding Star. It was fun to make all half square triangles. Have fun with it..
