Can you identify this block?

This is a gorgeous antique quilt in my collection, dated 1870. It's in wonderful condition.
I can't identify the main block though. Hoping someone knows? Thanks |
Sorry, I can't help with the block pattern, but for a quilt that is over 150 years old, the white is bright, the colors wonderful and the quilting is fantastic. What a wonderful treasure you have.

it's a variation of a Carpenter's Star
Such a pretty block! So nice that you have an antique quilt collection. I just have vintage tablecloths. lol
When I looked at it, I thought it might be some type of "crown" block, but haven't been able to find it so far. I, also, wanted to add that the quilt is amazing for it's age. Thank you for preserving the past. I'd like to see a picture of more of the quilt and also, could you give us the size of the block? It might help.

There is a block in the BlockBase which is Barbara Brackman's block collection called Hands all Around which has the outside star corners without the center break. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/297096906649288755/ The Center is just a square in a square. Sorry that I don't know the name. According to my calculations, the block is a 10 or 15 inch block. The pdf is my version I drew in EQ7.

Here are more pics.
I agree with Liz. It looks like a variation of Carpenter's Star. That was my first thought. Not sure though. |
Okay, I have to quit looking for your star block, Susie. I've downloaded 2 quilt patterns that I saw and liked. Just what I need. More quilt patterns lol

I really shouldn't play in EQ7. I like the overall pattern and would love it as a black background.
Barb, that's gorgeous! Now go make it :D
That's really pretty, Barb. I like the black background also.
You have a beautiful quilt! It looks like a variation of this Weathervane block: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMdQcAXQ42A
Thanks, DebbieJJ, it does look like it!
Wow! Such a pretty quilt! I love the white background and the bumpiness of the washed quilt. Such a treasure to have. I like Barb’s drawing of the pattern. Thank you Barb. I don’t mind sewing Y seams, I hate marking the quarter inch stops and starts-lol I like the 2 color (besides background white) too. You could always make it scrappy, but for a vintage look I think 2 color old looking fabrics would be beautiful to make. I’m not up to this quilt at the moment, but oh so temping! Thanks SusieQOH for sharing this beauty with us.
…..Did someone in your family make it? |
Your quilt is in amazing condition for it's age! It's as old as our house, lol! According to the book "Encyclopedia of Classic Quilt Patterns" the pattern is Dove at the Window. https://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-.../dp/0848724747 . The blocks is even featured on the cover of the book.
According to BlockBase, the block has been published as Dove at the Window, Laurel Wreath, Fringed Square, and Mother's Choice. This is why it's so difficult to figure out a block's name - it has several!

Toogie, no, not a family member. I'm the only quilter in my large family. I think I bought it on Ebay. It really is gorgeous, especially for being over 150 years old. The border, which isn't in the photo is gorgeous quilting as well.
I looked up Dove at the Window and it's not the same. However, it's in that Encyclopedia that NZ posted in the bottom left corner. I think I have the book. Will look up the names Dunster mentioned. |

I found this video by Jenny Doan that shows how she re-engineered the vintage block, and she mentions several different names for it. |
Rats, i thought i had it. Connemara flower block from McCalls quilting. close but no cigar.
Dunster, yes I see what you mean. Thanks!
Toogie, thanks! That's it. My blocks are just turned like a quarter turn it appears. :)
That's it, Toogie, thanks! :)
