Can you name this block?

One of the quilters at my weekend retreat shared her great-great-great grandmother's quilt. In this photo she is reading some of the family documentation. The piecing was less than stellar, the wool batting was lumpy, the fabric choice was confusing, and the quilt is priceless! We had a great discussion about the invention of the sewing machine, the history of buying fabric for quilts, tying or quilting. Great day! But no one knew the name of this block. Do you?

It looks like wild goose chase.

I've seen it referenced as both Wild Goose and Inside Passage, depending on the placement of light and dark fabrics.

Thank you :) The quilters at this site are so resourceful.

I had to laugh at the picture. It looks like the lady on the right is praying over this quilt....maybe for the piecing?!! LOL! It's a wonderful old quilt though and I'm glad you shared it.

What a wonderful piece of family history for the lucky owner!

Do you know if it is pieced by hand or by machine?

lindaschipper 01-29-2018 04:32 AM

Did she say how old the quilt was? Just curious....

A nice old quilt - I like the pattern, whatever it is!

It looks to me like a variation of Flying Geese.

Oh! I am working on a really similar block for the BOM I did last year. For a minute I thought it was the same. I am making the "rambler" block. The only difference is the direction that the flying geese face..

I don't think it's a joke, I think she really is praying over that pattern, because 2-3 other ladies have their heads bowed, some with eyes closed. Maybe I should try prayer with my patterns/piecing....

I do. Otherwise, more would be thrown out of the room. LOL

I checked the Quilter's Album of Blocks and Borders by Jinny Beyer and it is Wild Goose Chase from Patchwork Patterns, 1931 with a slight variation of a square on outside corners instead of 4 flying geese and a backgroubd triangle in outside corner.

Here is a link to a free pattern from the Fat Quarter shop https://static.fatquartershop.com/me...ockPattern.pdf

would all the great greats make the quilt circa 140 years old?
