Has anyone ever combined quilting and tying in the same quilt?
I have a quilt top made for my DGD for Christmas and I have started quilting it. But I am realizing that I probably won't have time to finish totally quilting the whole thing and still keep my sanity before we leave for Christmas in Denver in 3 weeks. I can't tell her to wait for a few weeks after Christmas because she is only 7 years old and wouldn't understand that. So I am thinking of finishing quilting the parts of the quilt that can be quilted easily, then tie some other parts of the quilt that would be much harder to quilt. DGD will not care, or know the difference. Has anyone else done this? Is there anything I should consider before I attempt this? |
Yes you can.... I tyed my center and quilted my borders. But never both in the same area.

Yes you can. several years ago I made a log cabin quilt. I tied the blocks and straight line quilted the orders. You can quilt in the ditch large areas and tie in the middle. I have also tied to the back so the ties didn't show on the front.

Its your quilt and you can do it your way :):)

yup what quiltlonger says.
|
of course!
|
Why not? It's your quilt. You can do what ever you wnat.

I hope you post pics. My MIL recently informed me that she bought a tied quilt and it needs more quilting. I agree that it does but don't know what to do.

Yes you can!!!

Yes, you can.
Lock the doors and ignore the sirens and pounding on the door from the Quilt Police. Do it your way. 7 year olds are not into waiting for presents. Any thing from granny will be a big treat. |
I intend to on my current project. I'm tying the center, quilting the borders.

That's exactly what I'm doing with my wall hanging made out of Slipknot t-shirts! I'm tying the shirt parts, but am quilting the borders and sashing.

I've done it lots of times and it is no problem. I've also mixed hand and machine quilting to get the effect that I wanted. You are the designer and you get to choose what method you use! Tie and machine quilt away and get the wonderful gift done.

Thanks everyone! I had never heard of doing it before, but I didn't see why it wouldn't work! I am glad to hear others have done it also!

I believe it was on this board that I read that someone in past years tied their quilt, then quilted them when they had time. I don't see a problem using quilting and tying together.
