Can't do mysteries...nope!

Can't do mystery quilts. Can't do block of the month. Can't buy mystery quilt bundles. My crazy brain wants to see the finished product to see what to use. Mystery bundles...afraid of clinkers/clunkers. MSQC has great daily deal today but just can't push that submit button...lol https://www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/dailydeal

I have no fear of the submit button! LOL I burned out on mystery quilts though, most look the same to me just different fabrics in different places.

Long ago, I did a Bonnie Hunter mystery that resulted in "Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll." I used Christmas scraps and hated the finished quilt. I set it aside and got it out the following Christmas. I love it!! Other mystery quilts I haven't been too happy with, but this one looks wonderful so it makes me optimistic that the next one will be loved, too. What is fun about the mystery quilt is making all the components and wondering how they'll all go together. It's an intense process if you do it via Bonnie's schedule and really helps when one is stressed due to not being "home for the holidays."

I am still enjoying mystery quilts. My personal cautions are that I must have all or nearly all the required fabric in my stash and I have learned to watch who is hosting the mystery. There have been a number of mysteries on the QB that I have enjoyed and even used the pattern a second or third time. I am in the middle of one now. My quilting club does a mystery every year and all of those options have been pleasing. Mysteries that are by a designer who has a history of tiny pieces, sorry Bonnie Hunter, I skip. The end result and intricate work does not please me. Those that demand you check in once a day for say, seven days or at a certain time, I skip. And yes, When in doubt, I will save the steps to the finish to my computer and wait for the reveal and keep or dump the file.

I agree!

My sewing time is for me. There is no excitement for me in mystery quilts.

I have done (and enjoyed) a couple of mysteries...I am pretty selective of the few I’ve participated in and it depends on who the instructor/quilter is sponsoring or hosting the project.

I never have liked Mystery Quilts - I think I do not like giving up control of what goes where. Even when I have a pattern, I rarely follow the direction of what to put where and the final assembly lol. I have been known to purchase mystery grab bags and at least with them, if you don't like the fabric it can be turned into something else (like masks!!). The BOMs that I have done, however, have all shown the whole quilt before starting so I knew what I was getting into beforehand - they weren't a mystery quilt at all.

But now with that being said, I did do a Kathleen Tracy Mystery Small Quilt with Civil war scraps on line at the beginning of all this covid mess and had fun with it! There was only one block that i disliked and remade https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Bonnie Hunter mystery quilts always look great but they have a lot of pieces. I have seen other mysteries that really don’t work.

I have too many ideas swimming around up there to blindly follow someone else's directions.

I don’t do mystery quilts any longer either but it is because I have such a long list of quilts I really want to make. Several years ago when I still loved McCall’s quilting magazine they had a quilt that took most of the year to do. It did let us see what the finished quilt would look like when finished. I couldn’t wait for the next issue. McCall’s has never been the same. It is now about the size of a comic book. Sad
