This is the version I want to make - a very large star

http://pinterest.com/pin/331204750/

I clicked to her website and read through but I can't figure out her dimensions. It looks like the length of the unsewn diamond is 7". Any idea what the height would be? I cut out a 7" long diamond and it looks very small compared to this photo. I'm at a loss. I really want a very large start.

Dont know what to tell you except dont use stripes in the background!

rubia 10-15-2011 04:38 PM

LOL Nope.. no stripes! I'm using camo Army fatigues for the star and will use a coordinating neutral for the background and will sew patches to the neutral area.

I have to say thinking it depends on the stripes....or the "stripee"??...lol
Yours is quite lovely, by the way...even with the stripes...lol...

ditto, that was the first thing that caught my eye.

ugh. This has been a nightmare!! I used her dimensions but tried to strip sew it and it was way off. WAY off. I'm going to bed. Guess I'll have to try again tomorrow night when the kids are in bed and I can concentrate. I was enjoying working on it with my mom since I'm at her house.

There was a Sewing with Nancy video earlier today that demoed templates with no y seams. It gave the dimensions of the widest strip you'd use for big diamonds. It looked a lot easier to me, rather like a Carpenter Star.

Actuslly her template is 8 inches on all sides. I am making a lonestar that is cut 2.5 inches at a 45degree angle. Apparantely she has sewn her fabric (7inches x WOF)strips together and cut at a 45 degree angle. At least I think that is what she has done. That should 8 inches on all sides. Try it on paper first because I am new at this and I am guessing compared to what I am cutting on mine. Hope it works and if someone can advise, am open.

How fun! i was thinking about this quilt pattern this morning. I have tried several ways to make this pattern but was frustrated with them all so I ordered this today!

Here is the video of how it is used:http://www.nancyzieman.com/blog/quic...reat-products/

Your stripes look wonderful! Sure it took a lot of effort - or is the star appliqued?

Thanks. No the star isn't appliqued, they are set in Y seams.

I decided that I wouldn't worry if the stripes lined up, I "let it go" and just cut and sewed...taking the worry out of it actually made it easier and it lined up on it's own just the way it was cut (the triangles were all one large block before cutting into triangles).

Another option re: cutting of the diamonds :
Unless you're fussy cutting the diamonds to get a certain image/motif, you can more easily rotary cut strips to make your (45 degree) diamonds.

That's the problem when you don't use Y-seams - the fabric pattern gets chopped up and looks horrible.
It works fine if it's a tone-on-tone blender type fabric, but anything else....not so much.

  - Looks great!

However, when care is taken with placement of the stripes...(and it's not that difficult):
