Has anybody used a card table for their sewing machine? I currently have my machine on an old desk and the desk has sides on it, so I'm not able to lay a quilt out to quilt it, and sewing together rows of blocks is kind of annoying.
Would a card table be too shaky? |
Depends on the card table. Some are fairly sturdy. Some are just plain rickety. And how heavy your machine is.
|
I have seen some that may be sturdy enough, but I don't know how much I would be willing to trust them with my machines.
|
I think it depends on the card table. If you find a sturdy one I think it would be fine. Have you tried the craft table at Costco? They seem pretty sturdy to me and they come in two sizes I believe.
Hope this helps. :-D |
When I've tried it, the table "bounces" when sewing. Might work if you had a very sturdy card table made of wood.

It's a Brother LS2125, so it's pretty light.
I would take off the upper part of the desk, but I'm afraid the desk wouldn't be as stable anymore. And I already tried to remove it once and didn't have a way to take the upper part off. |
I use a card table for laying out and cutting, a desk for piecing and my kitchen table for quilting.
My card table would be no where near sturdy enough for a machine. And like you I can not quilt on my desk |
If you would need to purchase a table I would suggest the small conference table, 4 foot by 2. I purchased mine at both an office supply store (over $40) and at Walmart (under $40). Both are good and stronger then the card tables I've tried.

I use/used a card table with no problems. Only problem I ever had was shaking while sewing fast with a light weight machine. When I used my heavier machine I had no problems.
|
I use a card table all the time  The only problem is if I try to sew at top speed , it does get shaky  Which reminds me to slow down
I have a Brother CS6000i |
They are too shaky for me...I have a wooden table that I use at the craft shows...it is the kind that you would pull a stool up to in a small kitchen.
|
my friend has one that's really sturdy wood top metal legs...but mine I barely let the kids use it for playing games on.
|
I use a banquet table, hard thick plastic top, got mine at Lowes. I have lots of room on either side of my machine.
|
Mine was a bit too shaky, but it is old so maybe the newer ones would be much more stable. ;)

I found a sewing cabinet on Craigslist for $80, and just saw another one for sale for $99. Originally I was going to build a table from plywood we have already, but after looking at the price for the lift hardware, the cabinet was cheaper!
Maybe you can find one near you, and then you don't have to use a rickety table. |

Depends on the card table. The sewing table made for my Singer Featherwieght is actually very similar to a wooden card table!
