Hi All,

I have looked all over the web and I cant seem to find what yardage I need to make this quilt for a queen sized bed.
My calculations when translating from quilters cache seem WAY off.

I will be using 4 colors.
Two for the "cards", one for the "bigger" diamonds, and one for the "smaller" diamonds. I hope I explained this so that its understandable.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks!

I don't have the measurements but if any one has Eleanor Burns book of Card Trick the yardage for different sizes would be in there. So maybe someone could help you out if they have the book. I made one several yrs ago but borrowed the book. Marge

I don't think we have enough information to help you. How big is the queen quilt going to be? If we know how many blocks we could give you an estimate.

Here is an example with block size dimensions, quilt size dimensions, and fabric requirements given. Hope this helps.

I was looking at the directions on the card trick...And having done one by Eleanor Burns. I found it easier to do.
It's called the winning hand by Eleanor Burns.
It's done by the strip method!!

The yardage for queen size is
Each of four cards 1 yd. ea

Block Background 3 yds

If your using borders
1st border 1 yd at 3 1/2"
2 nd border 1 1/4 at 4 1/2"

Binding 1 yd

90 x 104

Hope this helps
This came from Eleanor Burns book

When I was calculating how much I would need for my queen sized "Crossed Roads", I painstakingly figured how many square inches of each color were in one block and then multiplied by how many blocks I intended to make. But for good measure, I added a quarter yard to each one, just in case. When the fabric arrived and I cut it all up, I found that my calculations were pretty dead on.

I don't know about the yardage but those diamonds you speak of are actually the background and if they are not the same color it may mess up the card design. Not sure. I've done 2 card trick quilts and it just seems like if those 2 parts are not the same color it wouldn't look right. you may want to color it out on paper and look at it first before you cut up your fabs.

I will keep you updated on this quilt and the process I go through :)

I agree with this. I also like the look of card trick with 4 different colored cards, and I think sashing improves the overall look of the quilt.

That said, if you make it as you described, you will still come up with an interesting design. Depending on color choice, you might see different things...

dunster: the first picture you show is actually very close to the colors I want to use! haha

I really like how it looks! Thank you so much for these images!

These are the colors I am thinking of using:

I agree that Eleanor Burns makes all patterns easier to do. But it sure seems her directions call for a much longer quilt than I'm used to. I made a twin size Trip Around the World from her book & it was 102 inches long! But I was still pretty new at quilt making so didn't figure out how to make a TAtW shorter than that.

The measurements I gave for the card trick was for a queen size.
I the book I have she beaks down all her measurements in baby, lap, twin, long twin, full and so on.

I've always had good luck with her books.

I think it will be pretty. But... looking at the picture with my head tilted, I think I would piece it as strips rather than HST's. Then put the strips on the diagonal.
