(((Hugs to you))) I hope that you recover soon. What a scary ordeal!

If it's any consolation, you've prompted me to look into getting a guard. If there are any good reccomendations of "guard products" out there, now's the time to post.

I buy a lot of band aids! I prefer the Hello Kitty ones right now...got tired of those brown ones! Lol

Ouch! Just recently bought a glove to wear when cutting - after reading horrow stories on this board. Having to retrain myself to always put it on.

SusanSusan33 06-14-2013 06:17 AM

Good thing it wasn't more serious! Thanks for the warning!

dcquilter 06-14-2013 06:25 AM

Thank you all for your good wishes, and good suggestions! And Edie, thank you for the great quotes!
I am definitely getting the Klutz glove before i do anymore cutting. Thank you all again - this board is always so encouraging!

Yosamitesa 06-14-2013 06:40 AM

OUCH!!! I totally understand. I did that 2 months ago!!! hugs for fast healing.

MargeD 06-14-2013 07:26 AM

Ouch, that had to hurt. Fortunately, I've only taken little slices out of my fingertips, although I did have an altercation with my wand blender - never keep your finger on the on button when sticking your fingers where they don't belong. I think we've all been there to some degree or another. Hope your finger is doing better.

gramma nancy 06-14-2013 08:23 AM

Do get better quickly. I have been wearing a Fons and Porter glove on my left hand to avoid accidents. They are not steel mesh or anything, but are supposed to offer some protection. I -- thankfully -- have not had an accident since I started wearing it and so don't know how well it works. Perhaps you can try one when you are back to cutting.

PumpkinSundae 06-14-2013 08:47 AM

Hi...hope you are doing better. I cut myself once but no way near that bad. I did learn my lesson...thanks for reminding me.

Sandrea 06-14-2013 09:58 AM

When I was teaching classes several years ago, the store rule to our students was.....if you leave the rotary cutter open and walk away, you have to pay a 25 cent fine to the kitty. Don't know if it helped but it did keep our students more aware to close the cover when they walked away from the mat.

IBQUILTIN 06-14-2013 04:25 PM

Sewwwwwwww sorry for your boo boo. Sending a hug to make it better, and thanx for the reminder

Gail B 06-14-2013 04:26 PM

I always use the Klutz glove that I purchased from Fons & Porter. It was a little pricey BUT worth every penny if it prevents me from the dreaded slice from the rotary cutter.

Painiacs 06-14-2013 04:37 PM

Rouch! Thanks for the reminder!! Hope you feel better fast!

milikaa1 06-14-2013 06:08 PM

Awe man, I am sorry! I hope that your finger feels better soon!!

Gannyrosie 06-14-2013 07:32 PM

Hope you feel better. It happened to me 3 weeks ago. Didn't go to clinic but within a split second I put lots of pressure on my left index finger knuckle and then went to find the bandages. It finally looks normal. Hey but that's a lesson well learned. Like getting your first reck in a car, you're more cautious the next time.

mamab113 06-15-2013 04:57 AM

Ouch!! I've been there and done that, and left no blood on the quilt. You are a member of the flat finger group now!

anniesews 06-15-2013 06:25 AM

Been there done that as many others on this forum have done. It sure hurts for awhile, doesn't it?

jude by the sea 06-15-2013 06:56 AM

Ouch! I was cutting fabric yesterday thinking about how easy it would be to have an accident like that. When I was first learning to make torch beads I dropped my tool, bent over to pic it up and in the process put my left thumb right in the way of the torches flame....yes sirreee, hand in air running to sink for cold water! I can relate to your story...I try hard to be mindful but there are times!

EllieGirl 06-15-2013 07:35 AM

I did that a few months ago. I probably should have had stitches but didn't. I didn't want to waste time in the ER! I almost had the machine needle go through my finger yesterday when I was FMQ! It got the tip of my glove!

quilter2090 06-15-2013 08:41 AM

Yep, I did the same thing! Then, I went and bought the Klutz glove from Fons and Porter. I figure the glove is a lot less expensive than a emergency room visit! Now, if I had just bought the Klutz glove before I cut myself! Sometimes I just have to learn the hard way! Now when I rotary cut, before I pick up the rotary cutter, I put the Klutz glove on. Just like before I drive,I put my seat belt on. Safety first!

QandE2010 06-15-2013 10:50 AM

OWWWWW, I'm sure that hurt. My sister did the exact same thing about a month ago. Sorry this happened to you.

cathyvv 06-15-2013 10:53 AM

I have a 'safety' rotary cutter where the safety part just moves out of safety mode on it's own. It has cut the tip of my left thumb twice. Honestly don't know why I keep it. I guess it's time to toss it.

nstitches4u 06-15-2013 05:52 PM

Ouch! So sorry this happened to you. We all need a little reminder once in a while.

captlynhall 06-15-2013 06:36 PM

Good habits are as easy to learn as bad habits, beside the thought of getting a finger tip sliced off makes me cringe. So, every single time I finish a cut, I close the safety on the rotary blade. I mentioned this in another thread, but when I took my first piecing class, the teacher told us of a student in a previous class that did not show up for two classes. When she finally came to the third class she was on crutches, in a cast and told the sad story of how her rotary cutter was hidden in her backing fabric and when she picked up the pile to move it the cutter fell off and cut her toes so badly it severed some tendons and she had to have surgery to make the repair. That scared me enough to always wear shoes, and always close the cutter. Fear is a great teacher.

Putting my glove on now

AlaskaAlice 06-15-2013 09:59 PM
