Caring For/Storing "Vintage" Fabric
 

I got some fabric at an estate sale a while back; picture here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...n-t248100.html. I don't know quite how old it is, I'm guessing c. 1970's. That's why I put vintage in quotes - it's older fabric, but not necessarilyyet considered vintage. If you have older fabric like this, how do you store it? In with the rest of your stash or do you keep it separate? Do you iron it any differently than you would a new piece? I know if I wash it, I'll hand wash just to be on the safe side.

If you have some neat vintage pieces, I'd love to see them!

When ever I purchase older fabrics from an estate or (house) sale of any kind first thing I do when I get it home is toss it into the washing machine before it gets any further into my house (you never know what conditions it may have been in) so, it's washed, dried in a regular dryer setting, ironed, folded and put on the fabric shelves. Sometimes it is set aside if I have a special idea/plan for it and don't want to (lose it on the shelves)...it is always laundered first though

I have fabric from the 30s. I have it safely stored away from any light. I would not store it in any plastic container.

I always wash it first and just put it in with my other fabric.

Okay, 70s fabrics are vintage??? You're making me feel really OLD!! I have plenty of 70s fabrics that I BOUGHT BACK IN THE 70s.

Oh dear, no intent to make anyone feel old! :o That's why I put "vintage" in quotes! Though for all I know, the fabric could be from the 40's so it may be more "truly" vintage...

I'll give the fabric a good washing; for now I just had it separated. I think for many things, they are hardier than I give them credit for - I've worked with quilts dating to the 1850's and it's remarkable how things can hold up! Except in the case of silk... :P
