Carpenter Star HST

I'm trying to make HST for a Carpenter Star, using Rhonda's technique. Does anybody know how wide to make the strips? I want to make 1 big star, with a top approx, 60" square. I'm SO not good with math & figures.

I made a carpenter's star using this pattern http://www.maryquilts.com/wp-content...-Star-rev1.pdf.

The HSTs are 6" finished, so strips would be 5", I think. I'd probably make them 5 1/2" and cut them down a bit.

If the HST's are 6" finished your strips should be 6 7/8". If you're using an Easy Angle ruler your strips would be 6 1/2".

Looking that the link, she appears to be using a different method for making HST (sew 2 strips together, cut your HST on bias). So they are less than the 6 7/8" you need for HST from 2 squares.

Thanks for pointing that out Krista - I totally missed that. I probably wouldn't do it that way because of the bias issue, but to each his own.
