they are very simple to make. here is a tute. i made circles and folded the edges over. http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...s-t229837.html

I have a friend who made some thing like this. She cut two equal circles and sewed them together all the way around. For this you would use a white and a print. Clip the edges. After sewing, separate the two fabrics and make a small slit in the print near the edge. Don't cut the white. Turn the circles through the slit and then using a chopstick smooth out the curves. Iron flat. You turn the white sides over to form the square. This looks like it has batting in, but she didn't use any. She actually marked the finished square on the circles and sewed them together in rows which gave her the edges to turn over. If you Google "denim circle quilt" you can find this made with ragged edges.

Here is another method tutorial. This is going to be my vacation project in the car this summer. It has a name but I can't remember it. It is Japanese folded patchwork.

It is called Atarashii. I just found my saved info.

mommysewist 05-11-2014 09:39 PM

That's adorable! I want to make one to hang in the sewing room.

litacats 05-11-2014 11:51 PM

I can't wait to make one for myself it is so cute, I am sure my daughters would like one too.

Jenny Doan over at M*QC has done a tutorial using the Circle Magic template. It can be done without the template but the video will give you a good idea on how to do it. http://quiltingtutorials.com/all/cat...e-magic-ruler/

Thank you Both for posting the two photos of these cute quilts. Yes, it appears to be a cathedral window. I would imagine these little guys would make any quilter smile even when having one of those bad days of quilting mistakes!! :)

The tute on hand pieced circle could be a new craze..... Cute pic.....even for scrap bookers...

BETTY62 05-12-2014 04:59 AM

Love it. That's just to cute.

pocoellie 05-12-2014 06:40 AM

Check out Susan McNeill's 10 minute and 5 minute blocks. The 10 minute block will give you the same look as a "traditional" Cathedral Window, but a whole lot faster.

There is also another pattern that reminds me of this type of design although it certainly is different. It's called "Cat"astrophe. Looks like a cat sliding down a wall quilt while it's claws tear up the top. Wouldn't cat lovers love it?

You've done a faux cathedral windows.

Kat Sews 05-12-2014 09:25 AM

Your block looks like robbing Peter to pay Paul to me

twinkie 05-13-2014 02:26 AM

That's very cute.

AnnT 05-13-2014 04:49 AM

Oh man...this is too much like daily life! LOL

My cats pulled down my entire design wall about a year ago, with a Stack & Whack quilt on it that got all jumbled around. I was so mad! But fortunately, the fact that it came down on top of them seems to have scared the little monsters - I haven't had any incidents since! (It was just batting tacked to the wall, nothing that would have actually hurt them.)

Luv Quilts and Cats 05-13-2014 06:07 AM

Very cute! I am going to try and make one!

Wonnie 05-13-2014 06:31 AM

Litacats, did you have a pattern or just make it up? And, if you had a pattern, would you share it?

matraina 05-13-2014 08:25 AM

I cannot claim the making of this I found it on pinterest and shared it and a lady asked if anyone new how to make it, I wasn't sure if it was the catherdral window or not so I posted it here and asked the question, however I think it would be easy to make and as someone else posted you could use other patches too. I think I will be making a few of them in different patterns.

I can tell you how my ancestors would have made it. Cut a square out of paper. Find a saucer or glass that fit from corner to corner. Draw four arcs using the edge of the dish. Cut out the pattern, then add 1/4 inch seams. Have fun with it.

No, the Cathedral block -usually called the Cathedral Window block- is different. Do a Goggle search for Cathedral Window block and you will easily see the difference. Having said this, I have a question for anyone responding to the initial question: Is there a way to make the Cathedral Window block on a sewing machine? I've only ever made one such quilt, and that was by hand back in the 1970s. My arthritis is too severe for me to do hand-quilting these days, but if it can be done by machine, I might like to give that a try? Let me know is using a machine is a possibility!
