cathedral fabric question
 
what weight of fabric should be used for a cathedral quilt ? Ive tried muslin but it seems flimsy.

Muslin is typically used. There are many qualities of muslin, however. I would look for a better quality muslin, which has a tighter weave. The quilt will still be substantial because of the multiple layers.

Yes, you have to remember that it will be folded in on itself so it will no be a flimsey as a single layer.

Some muslins are flimsy. I like Kaufman Kona muslin, which I usually buy online from Hancock's of Paducah. (Be sure to prewash the muslin. I don't normally prewash, but I would for a Cathedral Windows quilt!)

I have one made in the 60's (based on the fabric) and the background fabric is a white sheet. It really has nice body.

If it is the tradition Catherdral window blocks, the fabric squares are folded in on themselves with the edges folded/rolled back over another fabric square. You will need to try a block with the edges folded back to see if the fabric will work. It was traditionally done with muslin but the quality of muslin really differs today.

a good quality bleached muslin is often the choice- mine I am using a variety of white on white's, I use a lot of WOW's so, each time I purchase a new one I get a bit extra and cut a few squares for my Cathedral Window's project- which is my current (hand- travel) project. so it has many different (prints) but I will tell you- sometimes those Wow's are hard to hand stitch through- (if you are doing yours by machine it isn't going to matter so much) but I have times I wish I had just stuck with the muslin.

Im planning on making a lap quilt and doing it by hand. I also save all my white and off white scraps separate..:)
