I have seen dark green and dark red backgrounds for Christmas table runners, black backgrounds for jewels and brights, medium dark blue background for blue-and-white floral windows.

BUT - you must-must-must check out this 2008 book by Lynne Edwards "CATHEDRAL WINDOWS: The Classic Folded Technique and a Wealth of Variations." The cover of the book only begins to open the door of creativity. Here's the amazon.com weblink:

Use the LOOK INSIDE function to check out some amazing photos. This book knocked my socks off.

I actually am going to use his tutorial! I just love it. I used it to make a practice table runner to see if I could actually do it! This is one of the best tutorials I have ever seen!

I just posted a picture of one I did. The instructions I followed were in the book "Machine Stitched Cathedral Windows' by Shelley Swanland.

Some great ideas here. I'm planning on doing a cathedral window someday with feedsack material in the windows. I had planned doing it with white for the outer part, but it might look just as good with black. Will have to think on it some more.

I made one with a black background and jewel toned windows in gave a stained glass feel. I liked it.
