I am going to give catherdral window a try. I saw some great directions on the web that are really clear with pictures...woo hoo. Has anyone made one? I was wondering how much fabric I'll need to make a decent lap size quilt. The contrasting fabric in the windows don't seem to take much so could I possible use fat quarters? Any suggestions would be greatly apperciated! Thanks :)

Do you want to do a "real" catherdral window, or would you be interested in a "faux" cathedral window? I found a fabulous tutorial on You-tube for it.

Hi BB,
I did a cathedral window pillow recently - here's a link to the thread: http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/23447.page I really enjoyed it and plan to also do a cathedral window lap quilt when I get time. I've already bought fabric for it, just need to get busy on it. As to how much fabric you need, if doing the classic cathedral window method the finished block size starts off about 4 times as large. For example, a finished 4" block starts off as an 8.5" x 8.5" square. Yes, it takes a lot of fabric, but remember that this is a completed top and bottom as you go, so there's no need to do a backing on it. Hope this helps, |
I made the Faux ,,so far I only made a pillow ,and it came out real nice,,,,

I have one started that I only work on in the evenings, in the winter. It started out to be a full sized, I'm about 2/3 finished, and it is getting real heavy. I started out with a bolt of cream and used scraps for the color, and I will end up with some left over, but not a lot.
It is lovely, but I don't know if I would do it again, this will be my third, and final (I hope) winter. |
Eddie, that pillow is just goergeous! I would not have the patience.
