I have always wantd to make a cathedral window. I was thinking of using jelly rolls to cut the windows either in batiks or 30's which might be more authentic - The jelly roll would be easy to cut 2.5" squares for the windows. What do you think??

It would work fine as long as the pattern you're using calls for a 2 1/2" block.

I just finished a lap size cathedral window for my sister, and loved doing it! I've been thinking about the same thing, using a jelly roll. On the one I just finished, I started with an 11" square. The 2-1/2 size square would be a little too small for the 11" sq. I haven't taken the time to think about what the beginning size would need to be to work with the 2-1/2" sq from the jelly roll - but it is definitely do-able.

I just looked at Eddie's tutorial and it uses 2.5" windows - Yeah

I'm currently working on a C.W. quilt and my starting square size is 9 1/2" and I use a 2 1/2" window. I hadn't thought about using a jelly roll, but that sure does make sense.

i am working on one with batiks right now! i am using an assortment of white on whites for the background and all of my windows are batiks! it is beautiful...when i hold it up the light shines through the windows and makes beautiful colors
i was going to make it for my son who lives in Florida...but as i work on it i keep thinking i should turn it into some sort of shade for my sewing room...it would make beautiful window coverings although, with time the batik colors will probably fade...hmmmmmmmm
anyhow...go for it! batiks are great for this project!

Cathedral Window was the first pattern I started way back in the early-mid 70's
A miracle I ever continued quilting
Fun to make; like lead to sleep under.

This is one of those patterns I cannot get my head around. I have tried, but I guess I will never get it. I do love the pattern.

I would have thought that the smaller then centers then the heavier the quilt. I wouldn't be game to try a traditional cathedral window quilt with that size.

BUT

A "mock" cathedral window quilt would be a good alternative. As others have mentioned there are lots of tutorials here. You could also google for "mock cathedral window tutorial". You're bound to find heaps like this one: http://www.plentifulpennies.com/2009...dow-quilt.html which you could adapt for your size requirements.
