Cell phone pouch
I’m wanting to make a pouch for my 95 year old mom for her cell phone and room for a small notebook and pen. Trying to figure how I can keep it within her reach but not in her way. Would love to hear your suggestions/ideas. Thanks so much.

I like this idea. Now this one is for a lap top but you could reduce it in size to fit her cell phone in the front pocket & have the zippered section for a small notebook. Now how to keep it within reach but not in her way is something I'm not sure I can help you with. Does she use a walker? Maybe you could add a velcro tab that goes around the walker that it could hang from. Same thing if she is in a wheel chair. If neither of those options & she is still very mobile, maybe an over the shoulder strap would be good. I'm just throwing out suggestions that might ring a bell for you. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

I've seen ladies wear them around their neck, like a necklace.

A lot depends on her mobility and lifestyle. Sorry, at that age, it is hard to guess what factors may affect the design and usage of the bag, so it is not in the way, as you requested!
A cross body bag style would keep it within reach and give some movement, yet still be able to get at it easy enough. Another possibility, might be to attach the bag to a waistband/belt. You could make the belt or use a real leather belt, with loops on the bag to slide the belt through. Good idea for the pocket for a notepad and pencil. Maybe some other things .... kleenex? lip balm or lipstick? etc. So don't make the pockets too small! You might want to include velcro, zippers or buttons so nothing gets lots between uses. Can happen all too easily! Good Luck! |
My aunt is in her late 80's and leaves these items on a tray on her walker. She does not leave the house much - she is not shopping or going out to eat unless taken by her son so she carries her purse.
A friend of mine was 90 and had a cell phone but never used it because she couldn't control her fingers well enough, she carried a small bag with her ID, credit card, cash, and note pad. Unfortunately she had a habit of setting it down even though it had a wrist strap and we were always going back for it, so I started keeping it in my purse whenever we went anywhere together. At the end of my mother's life - she was 80 when she passed, she was wheel chair bound and wanted to keep her purse in her lap whenever she left the house. She was able to sit up in the chair without restraints so holding on to a purse was not a problem. So it all depends on the person and what the person wants. |
I carry my cell phone and poop bags for my dog in a little pouch around my neck when I walk my dog. Works really well for me. Both hands are free. I also sometimes used it when I went shopping also, just stuck my keys, phone, and a coin purse with my money in it too. Mine had a little flap that went over the top. I know this is not the best way to carry your valuables when out and about....but I figured, I really didn't take anything that valuable with me.

Appreciate the good suggestions. Thanks to all.

I use a rather large, circular plastic tray that I bought at Wal mart for my mother's bed. It holds her phone and other items close at hand without being in her way. I also made her the bag from byannie's free pattern (watch the free video).

For traveling I also have one that I can put around my neck. It has room for a cell phone, identification, note pad, pen.

I made a small cross body bag for my neighbor. I made it with an adjustable strap so she could wear it around her neck or as a cross body. I put a zipper on the top for the cell phone and zippered pockets on the outside to hold other valuables.

My neighbor crochets "walker bags" hanging on the walker that will hold all those items. An across the armchair of the recliner she is sitting in, also good. Sew a big pocket on the clothes she wears.

I made this for my cell phone IPhone 6 and it has a snapped pouch on both sides. One is smaller but I can put checks, ID, lip pencil in. I wear it crossbody style. I made this after I just walked off without my purse, TWICE. Luckily, I got my purse and all contents back, even all my cash. I sent you a private message.

ByAnnie.com has a "call me" free pattern that would work for her

Thank you!

I am not sure if she lives by herself or in a care center nor if the cell phone is her only means of communication should she fall and need help. All of this should be considered when making a decision of what is best for her. A few months ago I fell and had to dray myself to a phone to call for help. I did not have a pocket in the slacks I was wearing so I did not have my phone with me. When visiting with the therapist at the care center where I was sent to recuperate she suggested a fanny pack to carry my phone. I went home an found one that was in the closet. It has three pockets in which to place things. I use the smaller one for my flip phone and carry a handkerchief in the other. There is also another compartment on the back which I have not used as yet. The belting used to hold it around my waist is soft and flexible and easy to put on. I can place the little bag front, side or where ever I wish. I like it because it is easy to take on and off when I change clothing. I leave it on at night as well and feel safe as I know I always have my phone with me should I fall again when I make a trip to the bathroom. Just a suggestion!

I like your idea. Thanks!

I have been looking for a pattern for my cell phone that I can use when I take walks. Toogie--do you have a link to the pattern you used? Your pouch is exactly what I was looking for. Any help is appreciate.

This is perfect for her to wear around her neck... and has room for other little incidentals too, besides her cell phone.

This is a timely thread. I was thinking about this for my DSL grandmother. I'm in Texas and she lost power but after spending the night with my daughter and famiky, she insisted on going back to her apartment despite no electric, thus no heat. We were obviously concerned so I was thinking about ways she could be sure to keep her phone near by.
I think the fanny pack is the best idea. If she were to fall, the phone would be secured in the fanny pack. A crossover bag without a secure closure might not be as sure in a fall, where it could fly out of reach. I've used a fanny pack, mostly on vacation, and it is great because it leaves your arms free and you don't have a bag swinging around while you move around. Personally, a crossover bag is more intrusive with your movements whereas a fanny pack is easier to deal with. Plus, you can swing it around to the side, front, or back as you need to. |
Here is a good pattern for a 2 zipper fanny pack

I love the idea of a fanny pack, especially with more than one zippered pocket. It's attached, doesn't flop around when I bend over and it can be worn on the front, back or sides. Thanks Sharongn for the pattern link. I'm planning on making several ones to go with different outfits. Fun project

I like it better than the kind of poop bags that hangs on the leash. Since i have 2 dogs, it leaves my hands free. And doesn't flop around like a cross body bag. Won't get twisted with the leash either. Glad you like the pattern! Btw, if you have an old fanny pack, you can reuse the belt webbing too. |
I really want to make this one for myself as it looks handy for walking the dog or running/walking for exercise. I appears that it would stay close to the body and, if worn cross body style, would be easy to reach the phone, etc. Wondered if this would work for your mom. I don't know if it would be in the way for her but maybe you can tell.

I love this pattern by a new-ish bag designer - The Zip N Go by ENDesigns
Here's a nice tutorial for it by Siah Swag Bags https://youtu.be/HY7qyHfb6oU There's a link to buy the pattern in the video description. Awesome tiny crossbody with built-in credit card slots, inside zipper pockets. Very inventive. |
