|
ya I have looked and I can't find it either, one of my friends want one but I have not evan heard of it.
|
I've heard them called "coffin quilts". I actually made a post about it here:
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-56472-1.htm There's a lot of great link in that thread. There's a very famous coffin quilt that I came across that led me to post that thread. Its here: http://www.shadowmanor.com/blog/?p=169 |
I saw a post on another forum that had what she called a casket blanket that was put in the casket with the loved one. It was beautiful and very fitting as the deceased was a quilter. I think it is a great idea.

stefanib123, This is the one I remembered, but I searched casket instead of coffin. No wonder why I couldn't find it...

I would like to find a pattern for this quilt, alot on the book but no pattern :(

I marked a whole cloth quilt that a church group was going to use to cover the casket at funerals. The Vermont Quilt Festival displayed a wonderful Casket Quilt some years ago. It contained Masonic symbols in the patchwork. I believe Betty Boyink wrote a book some years ago dealing with comfort issues that contained some coffin quilts.

A cemetery quilt. A casket quilt. What ever you want to call it came from. Back years ago.
We have what are called body bags today. When some one passes away they are put in a body bag to transport. Back in lets say our grandparents or great grandparents day there was no bag to put them in to transport. And since most people pass away or died at home. They would be laying on their beds. Thus the under taker would roll the person up in the nearest bed cover. (Bed covering was the longest thing and would cover the entire body). Most being a quilt. Cause people had to use what they had at home for covers and they made quilts to stay warm at night. So as the quilt was the closest thing near the body it was what was used. After a few year people started making quilts they want to go to the casket in. By the way stefanib123 I am from the same area. Only I am from the WV. area |
