One without arms is best. Arms just get caught under the sewing table top and really aren't needed. You should get a good quality office chair also with ergo adjustments. They are made for long periods of sitting and are better than your standard sewing chair. Have a Happy Birthday ;)

No arms -- they take up valuable sewing room real estate.

gennie1950 03-07-2013 05:17 AM

I used to have an office chair with arms. Never again. the arms were always in the way. Jo Ann's last year had a special on a sewing chair, and guess what I ordered it. I saved 100.00 on this chair as I have seen it listed on other sites for 230.00. It has a hidden storage under seat and casters. So Far I really enjoy this chair. Good Luck in your search.

namom5 03-07-2013 05:23 AM

Don't want to seem dumb, but what is the bunge chair? i need a new chair and have been shopping around trying to find "just the right one".

Flo Pierce 03-07-2013 05:33 AM

I have one. I could not live without it. My DH had one from an office he closed . it is wonderful It has arms but not
neccesary. I also have a metal typewriter table on wheels with little shelves that fold down. I made a padded top for my
table so I can press while at my sewing machine. NO more getting up and down to use the flatiron.

Passionate Quilter 03-07-2013 05:37 AM

I, too, go with the "no arms" crowd and also agree to get one with five feet so it is sturdy. I would go to a local quilt store and buy a regular sewing chair that has several adjustments to fit your body. They are expensive but think of how many hours you will be spending sitting in that chair. Happy Birthday and have fun shopping for your gift.

BuzzinBumble 03-07-2013 05:43 AM

Another vote for no arms.....i keep wishing my chair did not have arms.

mandell 03-07-2013 05:44 AM

With arms will be better. In addition I would like to suggest the use of pressure mattress is helpful for good body shape.

Nantie 03-07-2013 05:50 AM

I agree no arms mine has arms, because i thought I wanted them, as othees say they just get in your way, and definitely pick the chair out yourself to be sure it is comfortable for you

mjhaess 03-07-2013 06:10 AM

Mine has arms and i love it...

solstice3 03-07-2013 06:18 AM

Mine has arms. I can adjust them up and down which works out well for at the machine and when doing handwork. Go to office supply store and sit in all of them. Check for lumbar support, back and height adjustment. I went to 4 different stores before I found one that worked for me at a price I wanted to pay.

I use (ok everyone can laugh at me) the bunge chair from the container store and several of my friends have used it for a day and loved it. But make sure that whatever he is going to get you works for you. We wouldn't be happy if DH told us he wanted a wrench and we get to the store and find that there are a zillion choices.

I've seen that chair and I really like it. And, it is ON SALE, right now! I think I see one in my very near future. :)

colleen1978 03-07-2013 07:01 AM

I see everyone is saying no to the arms...but I have two office chairs with arms in my sewing room and I like them...only because I sometimes just sit in my room and watch TV:)

scrapinmema 03-07-2013 07:19 AM

My sewing chair is one I use at my computer desk. It has arms and I would not have one with out. My sewing table is about the same height as the top of my arms. When I'm sewing I can rest the quilt on the arms and it helps me feed the fabric easier. Also when I'm hand sewing I can rest my left arm on the arm rest and be comfortable sewing. I have a bad left arm and this seems to help with the nerve damage. This chair is quite old and hope it can be replaced with something like it.

MadP 03-07-2013 07:26 AM

I have one without arms. I don't think I would want one with arms. I think they would get in my way.

grannyp70 03-07-2013 07:29 AM

My chair has arms and it doesn't bother me to much. I think you should try out the chair for yourself and see which one you like best. The only time the arms bother me is when I want to turn around to my ironing board to press something. Other than that they are fine. Just try several out and get one that fits your needs. Mine was a gift from a real sweet girl and I will use it all the time. Happy birthday to you as well. Let us know which one you get. HUGS

abdconsultant 03-07-2013 07:34 AM

Arm Chair works for me!

richardswife 03-07-2013 07:34 AM

I have used both and the no arms is the best choice as the arms just get in the way. Also be sure to get a good mat to put under the chair to protect the floors and help the rolling of the chair. Be sure to try out several and get the one that suits your body best. Enjoy.

Quilter Day-by-Day 03-07-2013 07:49 AM

No arms,I got mine at Staples and DH bought it for me but he wanted me to go and pick it out which I'm glad I did because the one he was picking out I didn't like. If you watch online at Staples they go on sale and some of them are in the store. Happy Birthday!!!

MothrNatr 03-07-2013 08:01 AM

I would vote for arms - one that can be adjusted up and down.

No arms. Recently got out of rehab for upper back pain. Even sewing for 30 minutes caused pain. You might want to consider getting one with lumbar support. Has helped me. Happy birthday.

Quilt27 03-07-2013 08:49 AM

I'd say without arms also. Whatever you decide, be aware of the weight limit. The warranty is no good if the weight load is exceeded. Guess how I know this.

sap 03-07-2013 08:51 AM

I have both types of chairs and like the one without arms for sewing. arms get in the way in more ways than one. besides you can push a chair without arms up under your sewing machine and get it out of the way when you want to.

auntjo 03-07-2013 09:19 AM

In my sewing room I've always used armless chairs at my machines. I have an antique Singer w/it's own bench. The padded bench is comfortable & has storage, but no rollers & not adjustable for height - tho has always worked well for me. The last chair I actually bought for my newer sewing machine table is an adjustable, rolling doctor's stool. I can sit in one space, roll in & out under my machine, turn myself around for the ironing table, sewing supplies, push myself across the room - whatever, & it's easy to adjust the height. Love it & picked it up relatively inexpensively at one of those large office supply stores. It works quite well as a second chair across from my office desk when I'm sharing desk space also.

JoanneS 03-07-2013 09:39 AM

No arms, and go with him. Many sewing machine dealers carry good chairs with lombar support. Try the ones in your area.

IBQUILTIN 03-07-2013 10:26 AM

Happy Birthday and for sure find one with no arms. Won't reach far enough under your table

omaluvs2quilt 03-07-2013 11:07 AM

I took the arms off of mine! I bought a drafting type office chair that goes from normal to really tall to fit my 35" tall sewing cabinet. I just love it.

BarbaraSue 03-07-2013 11:57 AM

I have both, one with arms and one without arms. I prefer the one without arms. I prefer that the height be adjustable also to go with various stations in my sewing room== my table, my ironing station, my cutting station.

I agree with quiltstringz. Go and try out some chairs at an office supply store. You might be supprised what design you actually like. After this purchase, you can keep your eye out at garage sales, estate sales. I found my favorite chair, an oak desk chair, at an estate sale for $20. I have 4 sewing stations set up, and a chair at 3 of them.

Happy Birthday!

marla 03-07-2013 12:08 PM

I like the arms. But that's cuz of the RA so it helps me to get out of the chair.I can raise or lower the arms too. I sat in all of them at Staples before i found one comfortable for me. I also had a coupon but not sure if Staples still has coupons. I also looked at Costco but found their price too high. I suppose you culd order from Walmart and if that didn't work, return it. I did not look at KMart or Sears. Shop online to see what the stores offer, then try out the chair. I don't have problems w/ arms getting inthe way or getting stuck under a table.

Grannyh67 03-07-2013 12:51 PM

No arms, I had one with arms and got rid of it and got onw without arms. Now I am not knocking everything off and hitting things. Make sure it is comfortable.

Nanny's dollface 03-07-2013 01:12 PM

Happy Birthday! I recommend a chair that swivels with ability to adjust seat height, and of course no arms.

IBQLTN 03-07-2013 01:42 PM

OK, so I'm in the minority. My chair has arms and I like it. The arms are adjustable up and down though. I often times will sit back and use my reverse sewer and find the arms are nice and take some of the strain off my shoulders. I have fibromyalgia and get shoulder fatique easily.

My last chair did not have ajustable arms and they would sometimes get caught under my cabinet but that doesn't happen with my current chair.

I do recommend the 'butt test' as someone put it. I find that I don't sit far enough back in the chair when I sew and my back never touches the back of the chair (except when I scoot back, cross my legs and reverse sew). Maybe I spend too much time reverse sewing?! LOL

Happy Birthday!

nstitches4u 03-07-2013 03:19 PM

I prefer without arms. I had one with arms and they were in my way. I had DH take them off. Now I have a bright red Bernina ergonomic chair. It is the most comfortable, most adjustable chair I have ever had. I love it!

Happy Birthday!

I would suggest that you go with him to pick out a chair. My husband is 6 ft 3 inches and what feels good to him is too large for me. Get a good chair with good lumbar support, a back that can me moved to be more upright rather than reclining, a seat that fits your bottom, and the ability to adjust the seat height. Happy birthday!

I agree with all of the above. Measure how high the seat needs to be in order for your forearms to be parallel with the floor when sewing. Bring a tape measure with you when you go to the store. I hope you find a chair that fits you. Happy Birthday!!

AliceQ 03-07-2013 04:32 PM

I'm amazed at the responses here! I have 2 office chairs in my sewing room. One with arms and one without. I love the arms! They don't get in my way at all!
Just try 'em out and go with what feels right!

kathyd 03-07-2013 04:36 PM

I had a cheap office chair ($25) that worked for a while but the seat height wouldn't stay locked in position. Definitely go for a good quality office chair. One that will provide good back support. Unless you plan on doing lots of hand sewing in the chair the arm rests will just get in the way. The chair I have was my 50th birthday present from DH. It is a well loved and used present. :)

San Luis 03-07-2013 05:49 PM

Probably not ergonomically correct, but I bought a shop stool at Sears. I can scoot all around the sewing room, the height adjusts, and it forces me to get up if I sit at the sewing machine too long. Light-weight and doesn't take up much space. More econimical too.

nancy14418 03-07-2013 06:06 PM

If you have a wonderful Sewing Machine store look at their chairs. They have wider bottoms (not that you need them) but so much more comfortable when you feel totally supported. Mine is armless, has a bar at the top of the legs (in a circle) that lets me rest my feet on when I can. Mine is a Koala, I got it with my cabinet from Nancy's Notions.
