Changing thread brand and type in the middle of a project???
 

I have been using Gutterman All Sew thread and have heard so much about Aurifil thread that I placed an order and it arrived yesterday. I am in the beginning stages of a baby quilt and was wanting to switch over to Aurifil, is this going to effect the quilt blocks???

Aurifil is 2 ply (thinner) whereas Gutterman is 3 ply. So it could actually impact the finished size of your blocks because the Aurifil takes up less room in the seam. It would be a very tiny difference, but still there. Since you're at the beginning stages, I would probably do it and just not worry about it. If you're halfway through, I would wait.

Thanks lucyinthesky. Right now all I have done is sewn the strips together. I then need to piece the blocks together so I will go ahead and switch over. I can sq up the block once pieced back together.

Once you try the Auriful, you will love it! That is about all I use for piecing. I have used it for quilting too.

When you use it for quilting do you use a lighter weight??? 28 or 14???

I think it just depends how much of a perfectionist you are. I'd switch, but i've also used four different brands of thread (all white) while FMQing a top. I can tell where each one is, as the thicknesses vary just a bit, but no one else has ever said anything. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I just used it for quilting for the first time (not piecing). My LQS owner selected the 50 wt.

I think 28 and 14 wts. are thicker, aren't they? I think thread weights are opposite of what we'd think is logical.
