I live on afixed income and would like to know of the site or sites that pay for the fabric as long as you sew the quilts. I would donate all my time spared if the fabric was paid for. please help!!! ~~~~Kim~~~~

Quilts for Kids donates the patterns, and material. You have to supply the shipping back to them and the batting. They do like you to make one out of your stash, but I don't think it is a requirement.

Quilts for Kids supplies fabric for the top and backing. You have to supply the batting and the postage to return the quilt. They have no requirement that you make one of your own, just a suggestion.

Have you tried looking locally at some of the quilt guilds in your area? Some of ours provide materials if you want to do the work, and there is no postage required. Some ministries do the same thing.

I don't know the details, but Downy has a program where they send you everything to make a kid's quilt. I'm sure that someone on here can tell you about it. Some of the ladies on another site have made quilts for them.

check with a quilt shop if one is nearby. my local shop has a fabric pantry where folks bring extra fabric to be used for charity quilts.

Have heard some Project Linus chapters will, do you have any nearby?

If you contact Project Linus in your area, many have quilt kits ( batting included) and since there are donations, if you knit or crochet, many times, there is plenty of yarns stashed in the local storehouse to keep you in projects, too.
I crochet, and quilt, both, and have done afghans and quilts for PL. I am part of the Dallas/Collin/Grayson County, TX chapter.

Can't speak for other chapters, but ours is as supportive to each other as this Quilting Board. It is also another great way to make friends in your area who have your same interests.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It has given me a few ideas to begin working with some organization. I knew I could count on y'all. Kim, do look for a local guild.

Our guild makes
- 'cuddle quilts' that go out with emergency workers for children in trauma situations,
- 'Child Can' quilts for children undergoing cancer treatment
- quilts for families of fallen soldiers
- quilts for 'Loads of Love' - a missionary

Some of them are kits that are precut (or mostly) that you can take home to work on, some are groups that gather weekly or bi-weekly. All are working with fabric that is donated.

My mother-in-law volunteers at a 'new to you' organization that resells clothing - they only resell articles that are in very good shape - anything that doesn't sell or is torn or needs repair, is a candidate for remaking into quilts! These quilts are distributed to mission services for homeless, and to women's shelters. I've done lots of quilt tops for them too - she brings me a stack of squares to sew together, gathers them up for the next week's session. These humble quilts are often really charming and beautiful - the ladies laying out the fabric are talented in picking out interesting things that work well together. The denim quilts from this are just amazing - they leave the pockets in, decorative trims, etc.

And this is all in a small town ...
