Charity work
 

Not sure where to post this, but I have some time on my hands and I would like to do something with quilts for charity purposes (dog rescues, military vets, children, seniors). Can anyone that has knowledge of how to go about this maybe give me some pointers on how to locate charities that would appreciate this type of help? I am in Wisconsin.

Google Project Linus and see what is going on in your area. I enjoy making these simple quilts. I make mostly pieced tops. Someone else sandwiches them and then ties them. No pressure--just playing with fabric. The big job is the coordinator who delivers them all over our area--Culpeper, VA.

I would first check with guilds, LQSs, hospitals and nursing homes in your area. If you do something locally, you don't have the hassle and added expense of postage.
Some national charity quilting can be done for Quilts of Valor or Project Linus.
There are other charities that request a bit less time by making bags, such as Sadie's dream for a Cure and Beads of Courage.

There are many in my area to donate to. I think if you google your city's name and charity you will come up with a few to consider donating to. Then all you have to do is pick up the phone and talk to the person in charge of donations. They will give you the dates they have fund raisers so you can co-ordinate when you can get them done.

You might also consider doing some mending for the thrift shop for that organization too. I know that is a need.

I have a favorite charity ( Diabetes Chapter) I quilt for and they do quite well in the silent auctions. But, I also have just walked in and given other charities a donation quilt. The animal shelter and vet's house are two that are good ones in my area. I want to make a couple for the orphanage in carson city next. And I want to make those little drain pockets for the cancer ward here.

Check with the organization to see what size is needed/wanted.

I am currently working with an organization that wants quilts/blankets that will be at least big enough for an 8 year old .

Kids aging out of foster care are the most overlooked when it comes to giving. In our area there are programs in each county that help them transition to independent life since they have no family support. I make twin sized quilts for the kids who are going through the program. When they go to their first apartment they have something made just for them and not just the basics housekeeping supplies that businesses donate. If you do a Google search for "aging out of foster care" and your county you will find a list of services. You can also contact your county DSS and they can give you the name of an organization.
