MSQC & Green Fairy. I get emails from both & they both have great prices. Shipping is only about $1 diff. Green fairy will also have Fat Quarter bundles on sale for 40% off.

Jellyroll fabrics online is another good place to shop and has good service

If A charm pack has 42 squares and a layer cake has 42 squares isnt it cheaper to buy a layer cake and cut it into four instead of buying four charm packs?

It depends on the price. For myself, I never buy precuts unless they are on sale. So, for instance, a $20 layer cake or jelly roll would equal four $5 charm packs. One thing I like about layer cakes is that they are more versatile than charms, and at MSQS, for instance, you can only buy one at the sale price (usually) so a layer cake will be enough to do the job.(with some other fabric added for background, borders, etc.)

So many of you mention MSQC as a great place to purchase charm packs and layer cakes, but to be honest, I have the same problem with any I have purchased from them and LQS as they are seldom five or ten inches; they are always LESS and then you have to adjust your entire pattern accordingly. I'm going to give up buying them just for that reason. The only advantage is the variety and coordination of a fabric line and the cutting already done for you. I would rather purchase a 20 fat quarter bundle for $65.95, and cut my own charm and layer cake squares and get the size they are supposed to be. I can get 2 -10" squares and 4-5" squares (& some left for stash) from a fat qrtr so would get 40-10" and 80-5" squares, which is almost equal to one layer cake pack and two charm packs that would each sell for $34.95 (x3=$104.85), almost a $40. savings and I still have the variety of 20 prints that a pack would have. To my advantage of the fat qrtr bundle is I can prewash them and you can't easily prewash precuts, I am a prewash person because I want the shirinkage done before I start. That is my opinion, and I'm sticking to it. If I deem correction, I accept constructive criticism.

I've gotten several from this site. https://www.jellyrollfabric.net/ They have some great sales; just be sure to check if they are 20 or 40 strip rolls.

I do this too. Then, I find myself thinking about the other quilts I have made with a piece of this or that. I Cut out 2.5 inch strips as well as 5 and 2.5 inch charms. I try never to have more than 2 of a particular 5" in a quilt but love using several of the 2.5 inch strips in bindings.

I think the Brand is more important than where you buy. Certain mfgs have better quality. In my case, I don't like precuts that are pinked. I like straight cuts, so I normally cut my own. I have purchased a LAYER CAKE from M*QC, Connecting Threads and Keepsake Quilting to test the quality. They were ok, but not buying again.
