I hate those things and made a mistake once and the agreement had a price in it and I had signed up to pay for a monthly charge. So now I am hesitant to sign any of them. |
The moda bakeshop link for instructions wants you to accept an agreement.

I didn't get an agreement when I clicked on it. Strange.

If you start with a 5" square then sew it, you get a 4 1/2" square, not 3 1/2". There are tons of patterns that call for 5" squares. Modabakeshop.com is an excellent resource.

With fabric that's (conservatively) 42" wide, you can get four 5" squares on either side of the fold. The 10" squares are just double this, so you get two squares instead of four. You wouldn't really want to get a square that was cut "over the fold" because then you would have a crease that might be hard to iron out. So I think the sizes were done based on practicality. You could buy charm packs at Hancocks of Paducah of their sold out and discontinued lines long before they were available anywhere else. They were only available in the store though. |
Here is my favorite lap quilt pattern that uses 5" charms:
http://schoolgirlsamplers.com/pdftut...peedyBaby2.pdf I use it for more than babies and I use a plain fabric for the center and embroidery a large design in it. Good Luck! |

when we first start quilting, we are taught about the 1/4" seam, and how important it is.......so most fabric is cut with a 1/2" added to incorporate the 1/4" seam...so the question is why are charm packs sold with out the 1/2"? they are usually 4", 8" or 10", so when you sew them they become 3.5 " and now you have cut everything else in the quilt to weird sizes.....please helo me understand this.....thanks Used to be charms were always 2", 4", or 6"...but 5" works better across the width of fabric, so that is what they went with in the industry! |
