I would like to find a pattern for a chatelaine for a secret pal. I know it holds scissors and thimbles and not sure what else. Your help would be appreciated.

Ive never heard that word before but most quilt supply sites have patterns for items like that, If you type in Quilts by the Bay in Galveston Texas in your search box, they have lots of patterns for notions

I found this site:

http://www.byannie.com/scrapbag_chatelaine_patterns.html

There is one there and they sell patterns, didn't specifically look to see if that one was on there, but would assume so. Yep, it is there, thought I should check. It is under "A Place for Everything".

Was very surprised myself just recently (I love these myself!) But, at Walmart, in the sewing end isle...is exactly the set to make for these. I have them on my Christmas list. Such fun too! Believe the brand is Clover. Also, check out keepsake quilting...believe they had a small version..Keep us posted on your finds! The real silversmiths that make these to sell...are beautiful-but, very costly. Skeat

What a great idea.........I always have to stop and look for things........also it would keep the pins out of the carpet......thanks for the idea

Also, Jenny Beyer has a hand quilting book (just beautiful!)...can prob find it at your library. Know that Borders usually has it in stock. Anyhow..she has a whole chapter on 'Chatelaine's'...she collects them and gives references to some that make them. Skeat

I've a quilting book here called "Crazy Quilt Odyssey--Adventures in Victorian Needlework" by Judith Montano. It has a wonderful pattern for a chatelaine, plus some other lovely things to make that would be awesome gifts. It was published in 91, so I've no idea how hard it would be to find a copy now, but it would be worth the search. I would be happy to try and make copies of the pattern itself if you'd like. Chris

Hi, I remember seeing some in that wonderful southern lady's sewing magazine, Sew Perfect. She has some on her website and did a show about it. I was rummy with a fever when I saw it, but I do remember because I wanted to make some. :)

I received a chaterlaine from my sister-in-law as a birthday gift. From her gift I made a pattern and made several. I will attach a picture of 2 of them.

Length of the Chaterlaine: 41 inches long (white) 42 1/2 Inches (blk/red)
Width of the Chaterlaine: 3 1/2 Inches wide at the bottom (White)
2 1/2 Inches wide at bottom (Blk/Red)

2 1/2 In. wide where it rides around neck(wh)
1 3/4 Inches wide around neck (Blk/Red

Chatterlaine has a small pin cushion (blue on white/green on blk/red)
Chatterlaine has a mall Pouch on inside of LEFT side of chatterlaine for a
spool of tread or ??
Chatterlaine also has a small pouch on the OUTSIDE LEFT for notions - pouch is Orange on the Blk/Red Chatterlaine.

On the top of each pouch (the opening) I put a piece of thin elastic in to make the opening pucker a little bit so whatever is carried in the pouch can't fall out. You will note that the pouches also have a bottom which is about a 3/4 circle attached to the rectangular piece of fabric used to make the pouch...I hope these instructions are clear???

Small ring attached to RIGHT side of Chatterlaine and a pair of tiny scissors are attached.

When making these, I found that if I put a piece of velcro just above the bottom of the chatterlaine on each side I could clasp the two ends together so I didn't keep "losing them" off my neck.

I used bias tape around the edges of the chatterlaine. They make great little gifts and are fun to make.

Randy, thank you so much. My birthday is in Feb so I will consider this my birthday present. They are very, very nice, and what a neat idea. I had never heard of them until I joined this group.

PB, I was reading about you looking for a pattern for a chatelaine and I was wondering, as I kept on reading, what it could be. Imagine my sur-prise, when I got to Randys' picture of a chatelaine, to know that I bought one at a thrift store for $1.98. I had no idea that's what it is called. I thought it was so cute as it has so many sewing notions on it. Thank you. Estella

Thanks for that super picture and the measurments. I did'nt know what a chatelaine was, until you showed the picture. I have seen them before but out of felt. But as I was looking at it and observing the details, I kept thinking about a neck-tie. It would be very easy to convert an old neck-tie into a chatelaine, In fact I'm going to make one for my self. There are some nifty ones out there, and the thrift shop would be the first place to look. Most ties are well made and of various fabric's, Thanks again.

Becky:
What a great idea. There are some wonderful ties to be found. And yes, ties are very well made. I took one apart one time to get a pattern and couldn't believe the construction. Now I don't mind spending the money for a really gorgeous one! Make sure and send us a picture of yours when you finish it. We all get inspired from the "Show and Tell" items we see. Good Luck!

Merry Christmas,
Randy

Randy

I'll have to wait till after Christmas, mainly ,because the thrift shops won't be open till Wed. But I am going to make one, slimply because I will put it to very good use. As far as pictures are concerned I'm at my youngest sons time frame, he has the digital camera, So I have to wait till I get over there or he gets over here. He was sweet and came over and took some pictures of my quilts for me. But I have to wait to get with him. But thanks for you encouragement.

Just a quick note to those who are planning on making a chatelaine. If you are attaching scissors, thread clips or seam ripper, make sure the cord you use is long enough, so you can use when sitting upright or standing at ironing board. Go ahead, ask my poor sore neck why.

Becky 12-25-2006 03:57 PM

Boo

What would you recommend for a cord for the seam ripper, and the sissors. Or would a pocket for each be better? Or is the whole idea about everything being attached to the chaterlaine so there not misplaced and all notions being in one place for your at hand project. Did that make sense? Sorry I'm alittle dingy, It's been along day.

Boo 12-25-2006 05:23 PM

Becky, I must be dingy because I understood perfectly. The seam ripper prolly would be better in a pocket. Most of them don't have a place to attach them anyway. For the little scissors you could use ribbon, or fabric, or cording. I like my scissors attached because I often misplace them or leave them on the table when I need them at the ironing board.

Randy 12-25-2006 07:19 PM

Good advise, Boo. Thank you!

Norah 12-26-2006 07:57 AM

I am definitely making a chatelaine!! I have a pair of Gingher snippers about 5" long... comes in a little black case that I hang around my neck with a ribbon. I even wear them to bed, 'cuz I forget to take them off. I couldn't live without those sissors. I use them numerous times a day. Can't wear my thimble like that though, so I'm making a clatelaine. I like the tie idea.

Randy 12-26-2006 06:25 PM

Hi Guys:
We all survived Christmas, I see. We had a wonderful time, I hope all of you did, too.

My scissors are attached to a ring (key ring, actually) so the scissors are always on the Chatelaine. The key ring is whip stitched to the end of the Chatelaine tie. If you look at the picture I attached a few days ago you can see the ring on the red and black Chatelaine. One of the pockets/pouches on the ones I make is deep enough for the seam ripper to be tucked in. I also add a thin elastic to the top of the pouch to help keep everything in the pouch nice and comfy and NOT falling out. If you wanted to use Velcro instead of the elastic I'm sure that would work great, too.

Happy New Year and keep sewing!
Randy

Becky 12-30-2006 02:22 PM

I bought some ties and I made one, I'm working on my second for a friend. But I don't understand something. I used the picture as my guide, And memory, of awhile back. I made a sm-pocket for the seam ripper, a pocket with sm elastic-for the thread, I made a small pocket with ribbon attached at the top of the pocket, for the sm-sissors to be attached to, and I made a small little pin cushion, with a sm ornate button to mark it's location. So I would'nt stick myself . Dose that sound right? Or am I missing something? Please help me ladies. Thanks

Randy 01-01-2007 04:32 PM

Hi Becky:
It sounds like you thought of everything! Your Chatelaine sounds very well "pouched" for a working quilter. Good job! Make sure and take some pictures of it for all of us to ooh and aah over!

Happy New Year one and all,
Randy
