Chefs Need Help

I always come to this site for the best advice and encouragement. My dd is going to a wedding in Texas of a friend she went to pastry school with. Her friend is marrying a chef, so I had this Loralie fabric for awhile now. But.....I'm stuck with the design. After adding multiple borders with food related fabrics, it looks too geometric to me. I need advice on what to add next. I have more "yummy" fabrics. I also would like to add a red and white check border, like a table cloth. The backing will be black and white. Any advice will be helpful. TIA.

INHO, it would be good to break up the linear format with something like flying geese.

Tartan 07-23-2016 06:00 PM

I might look at pieced or paper pieced blocks of stacked bowls, coffee cups etc. to add in blocks around the central portion you have pieced.

I agree, like a braided boarder or anything non linear.

How about using 4-corner-snowballed blocks to create round "plates" of the foods you have fabric for? These could be used in a border OR the body of the quilt.

Nice fabric, and lots of great ideas for you. :)

Ariannaquilts 07-24-2016 03:51 AM

I love Jan's idea of the plates that would be very cute. Hope you show us the completed quilt.

QuiltnNan 07-24-2016 04:30 AM

it definitely needs something to break it up. also, some red needs to be added towards the outside, imho

ManiacQuilter2 07-24-2016 06:51 AM

Would a piano border work at all??

tessagin 07-24-2016 07:02 AM

With the fabric you have you could do some 1/4 and 1/2 log cabins that would give a floating effect.

TeresaA 07-24-2016 07:31 AM

Lots of more complex things you could do, but I think the checkerboard you mentioned would be very nice too, if you don't want to put monumental work into it. I'd use red and some of the black on white print.

Onebyone 07-24-2016 08:48 AM

I think the center design would have made great placemat centers.

Camille 07-24-2016 01:42 PM

I also have 2 more and am making them placemats.

It needs more pops of red imo.

I'm thinking of something like "icing on the cake" idea. like a scallop border.

or a cupcake!

Are you going to stick with the red, black and white theme? For some reason when I saw the picture, blue popped into my head. Adding another color?????

Bree123 07-25-2016 06:07 AM

For next border, I was thinking square within a square, using the checkered fabric for the on-point squares & the red fabric for the triangles that surround to make the outer square.

Karamarie 07-25-2016 06:10 AM

Great ideas so far. I think it needs some more red in it. Looks good though.

Love Tartan's idea of stacked coffee or teacups, especially since coffee pots and teapots are in the large print already.
Paper pieced?

crafty pat 07-25-2016 10:41 AM

I like Jan's idea best.

Wider Blocks on the sides - maybe in Red with sashing in between using one of the Print Fabrics.? Blocks could be as large as 12 inch Finished? Can't wait to see finished Quilt... The Quilting could be large Kitchen utencils of different kinds like : Rolling Pins, Whisk, Cookie Cutters, Baster, Cookbook , Pancake Turner, Spatulas, Wood Spoons, Potato masher, or measuring Cups.. etc.. [Just the outlines of them]. Ambitious needlework for sure but would look really nice...

klswift 07-25-2016 05:26 PM

the first thought I had was to take off the coffee pots and continue the spoons border. Then add another red border. You can continue with a couple foodie borders and then a red as many times as you need to make the size you want. I think the red borders would break it up and provide a zap. When quilting, I would try some sort of baking item (cake, pie, etc) and quilt with black thread in the red strips. Since the food prints would be wider, you could quilt 2 strips together with a bigger item, just keep it round and maybe do it in a red thread. As far as the wonderful center piece, I would echo quilt the chefs in black. Another thought, perhaps write their names on the checkered strip beneath their bodies.

Camille 07-25-2016 05:27 PM

I will be adding more red and other colors. I have cupcakes that I will use as corner stones at some point. I have to look in my embroidery files. I think I have stacked cups and saucers. All ideas sound good. Have to get cracking. Thanks all.

K-Roll 07-25-2016 10:05 PM

I like the idea of scallops or fluted edges in there somewhere...maybe not a scalloped border, but scalloped or fluted design, perhaps cut out of the red checkered fabric against a cream or white background, edged in black?

Ok scallops out of checks might be a nightmare

DOTTYMO 07-25-2016 11:04 PM

How about piano key with knives and forks etc quilting or applique inside to compliment all the food,.
