We just found out that my husbands grandmother's cancer returned. She had found out about 4 years ago that she had lung cancer. Went through chemo/radiation etc. It was during the winter so all of her hats were warm and fuzzy. She begged me to make her some for the summer. Has anyone made one before? I went on the internet and pulled up doo-rag patterns and so forth. Just wondering how comfy they are on soft heads?! Looking for ideas... I don't want to make something and find out that it itches her head. She would like me to make a bunch and I know you ladies/gents have suggestions or have made them before and know which ones are good and which ones aren't.

do you crochet or knit?? There are very nice, soft, lightweight yarns out there that would work wonders!!! One that comes to mind is Lion Brand Microspun Yarn. It is a lightweight yarn, thinner than your average yarn, and it is SUPER SOFT and has a nice sheen to it!! It is 100% acrylic so it's not itchy at all. I made a scarf for my mom out of a eyelash yarn and used this with it. It really made the scarf softer. It also comes in a lot of colors!!

Here is a link to it on Joann.com:

I forgot to add....My very best wishes to your grandmother-in-law. I pray that she has a speedy recovery!!!

Here is one idea. I also see my patients wearing bandana type head dress cloths, tied in the back. I think that at chemo centers they have styles to choose from and purchase. I'll do some checking for you. (I am a RN Case Manager for Hospice) Sara

I do crochet, but am not very good with following patterns. I basically can do blankets and scarfs b/c they are just straight. Not sure how well I would do with a hat. I did see those patterns, but figured I couldn't do it. I can use my sewing machine a lot easier!

Those are adorable! I was thinking a scrub cap, but wasn't sure how it would feel on her head. The seams, If they would scratch or not. That hat seems like there wouldn't be much actually touching her head, right!?

On Nancy Notions webpage there is a catagory called giving back or something like that. Anyway there is a pattern for Chemo hats as well as some other useful things like walker bags, scarfs for soldiers & several other things. It's www.nancynotions.com.

Thank you for that site. I think I am going to have to make a couple different kinds and see what would work. It is tough to say how much "coverage" she wants too. I would think she would want more than some of the hats have.

Do rags are soft nylon that you wrap around your head, As a African American I use them for tying my hair up i made some chemo hats using cotton knit fabric, it let your head breath. this is a like for the hats for Chemo hats the site is http://www.headhuggers.org/patterns/spatt01.htm

I'd be glad to sew one and mail it to you/her. Please PM me with your address. The OR hats are really comfortable, as I wore them for 10 hr/day for 10 years, but I also had hair. Hey, it might be a change of pace for her! Sara

Debra Mc 04-27-2009 01:08 PM

I like what Jerrie posted especially the knit one. This would be really nice made in Minky fabric. Nice & soft. I use to have a bandana scarf with sort of a quilted top. The quilted part came over your ears & was at least 6 inches wide , then the tails to tie. It was a little bigger than most bandannas. I will try & draw you a pattern of what I'm talking about if you like.

Thanks! It is hard trying to figure out which style she would like. I know most of them are probably comfortable with hair, but hard to say which one would be w/out hair!

I do like that knit one. Curious how it would hold up in the minky fabric. That is a good idea. I think I will have to play! Oh darn... :-)

God Bless you and your family! I just lost my DSIL/BFF to cancer on the 19th, she was only 47. If you ever just need to talk, I'm here. Don't have any advice or hats, I just made her quilts and wall hangings.

the crown of the cap you can cut down and the minky fabric will hold up well that way it will not be so heavy on her head and will not slide gt;<img src="http://signatures.mylivesignature.co...4EE0BF9B09.png" />&lt;/a&gt;

Here are directions for the comfort hats. I made several for the local cancer center a few years ago, they gave them to the ladies in treatment. I made them 2 ply to be reversible and there were no seams to itch or scratch. Used T-shirt knitand also soft cottons. Ruth

I'm an OR nurse also and have made and worn cotton OR hats off and on for over 35 years now.. I have tons and would be happy to send a couple your way, just pm me your address. If there is a favorite color, let me know and I'll try to oblige. As to the comfort. One of the nurses I work with was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. After her surgery and into her chemo she lost her hair.. she has worn the fabric hats similar to mine at work and out she said they were comfortable for her. Now her hair is coming back in and she has quite the collection of hats.

Hi,
So sorry about your husband's grandmother's struggle with cancer. I have family and friends who are in the same position and you are sweet to try and help.
I have a friend who has been knitting chemo caps that she designed that are soft and light weight and, in the natural colors, almost look like short hair. They are a loose knit so would be comfortable through the summer's heat. Her email address is [email protected] If you email her she can send you a photo of the caps and choice of colors. She and her other products are on the website www.shopthefrontier.com.

Here is a few patterns. I made the quick and easy turban for my mother. That was several years ago. Wasn't even sewing then. It was fairly easy and my mother said it was comfortable. (I used a stretch knit - i think it was 100% polyester)
My thoughts and prayers are with your grandmother.

Thankyou crkathleen. This is a great site that I'm sharing with my cancer patients.

Oh yes, Melissa K, I'm getting my courtesy hat made for you, but we're off on vacation, so it will be delayed a bit.
