Cheryl Malkowski feathered star pattern
Has anyone made one of her "stars over ...." patterns? She claims they are beginner-friendly. You can see them here: http://www.cherylmalkowski.com/shopping/ scroll about half-way down. Thanks for your input.
|
Never made them, but I'm going to check out the website. Thanks for sharing.
|
I haven't but I will say that a feathered star (like is in the middle) is not what I would call beginner. That being said I have found that if I really wanted something bad enough I could normally work through it.

Do you enjoy paper piecing? I think the reason this pattern is beginner friendly, is because you will get accurate points with the paper piecing technique.
|
Beautiful pattern. Thanks for sharing.
|
If you have never tried paper piecing before I would try something small just to make sure you like the technique and to get a better idea of how it works.

oops, I think I looked at the wrong pattern. The one I was referring to definitely said paper pieced. Sorry.

I think the "feathers" and "diamonds" are all done with HSTs from what I can see...so that would be beginner friendly. And the entire top is broken down into six "lessons," like a BOM. I think a beginner with patience could do it.

I have her "Blocks to Diamonds" book and all the patterns in that are paper pieced using freezer paper. They are very accurate. She also includes directions to cut the fabric sections on grain. All the block patterns become diamonds, which you make 8 of and then assemble the star from those diamonds.

I like the patterns --but don,t know if I would want to do it or not
|
I have done something similar using HST but usually newbies done' have a consistent accurate seam allowance. I wouldn't recommend any of her star quilts for a beginner.

thanks for all the comments. Eleanor Burns has just come out with a feathered star book, and I've never gone wrong with one of her patterns, so I think I'll go with EB.
