I am finally able to really look through my mom's sewing things - Has anyone ever done a Chicken Scratch quilt - It looks like stars done on the dark squares of gingham.
Kind of different

Reason I am asking is that Fabric.com has gingham on sale today

Someone on the board recently posted a chicken scratch project she was working on. It doesn't really look that hard. Just time consuming.

Chicken scratch is an embrodiery technique, it can be used on quilts or pillows.

I found you a site with free patterns.

There are a couple of posts about chickenscratch....just go to the search menu. Some members here have posted some really beautiful examples...I think WillieMae was one in particular.

Don't forget to post pics if you decide to go ahead with it.

I've never done a quilt but I've done a little chicken scratch embroidery. I love the look of it, almost like lace. It does use a LOT of embroidery floss. Goes fairly fast, though.

I haven't done any for a long time ... but I do remember that the gingham needs to be squares no rectangles - this means even thread count horizontal and vertical! Otherwise you get a very wonky design. It was easy to do though!

I never did do it, but my Grandmother would do it alot. It was so pretty!

I can remember seeing that done on gingham for tea towels and aprons etc when I was a kid, must have been my grandma's. Haven't seen it done as a quilt ?

A group that hand-quilts at our Senior Center did a queen-sized one last fall. It was a star design on orange gingham.
