Many of us have chlorine added to our water by "the powers that be" -

Can this be a cause of fading of some fabrics when they are washed?

Our city water has it too...kinda makes ya wonder...

i don't care for the chlorine, not only in my fabric/clothes but in my food, cleaning dishes, or in the shower.

we have an entire house water filter to remove it and then i have an additional filter attached to the kitchen sink.

It would depend on the amount of chlorine added as to whether it would be a significant factor. At one point we lived somewhere that the point where the chlorine was being added malfunctioned and when people complained and the water was tested the concentration of chlorine was significantly higher than in the local swimming pool! That sort of concentration of chlorine would definitely cause damage. The normal amount would be much less likely to do so.

I think that over time and repeated washes, yes it will contribute to fade. I don't think you'll see any difference in a single wash though.

I don't think the amount is that significant to cause damage. If it were, it would have been noted long before now, as it affected everyone's clothes.

It's not like what you might add to your washer if you were bleaching clothes.

yes- with time the chlorine can be blamed for excessive fading...have you noticed your clothing fading faster than someone elses? if your clothes fade a little more with each wash- so will your quilts...it depends on the concentration of chlorine how much fading you will experience

Although ... is it really the chlorine? Many of us have water that has no chlorine in it, and our clothes and fabrics fade too! Some of the dyes are less set, and the colour continues to come out. And then there's the general wear and tear on fabrics .... easy example would be blue jeans!
