What criteria do you use to decide batting for an hand applique'd quilt? How do you handle the stitching areas if the applique is larger than the batting's stitching requirements?

How do you plan to quilt it? Can you stitch in the applique? A picture would be helpful.

I plan to hand quilt it, if the batting lends itself to it, otherwise will be sent off to LAQ.
The blocks are all finished, half redwork the other half applique... still working on the over-all layout.

Cute! I always use a poly batting because I hand quilt, and
have heard that cotton is hard to hand quilt though. Have heard wool batting is AWESOME for hand quilting, but I havent used it before!

even if the batting says you can quilt 10" apart that makes the blocks saggy. I would outline the applique shapes and use matching or clear thread and go into them to do those shapes, like her arm and apron. the redwork if you outline real close to the stitching it should hold it good and you can echo or meander out to the edges

I am wanting to use wool if at all possible, but it calls for quilting 2 inches apart. If you have an area you weren't really wanting to quilt into, but it's larger than 2" square, how do you handle that? Would that make you look at different batting altogether?

lovely blocks!

You might want to do something like quilting the circles in the dress and making stripes or some type of grid in the apron.

Are you planning some type of grid pattern for the area around each Sue?

Am currently thinking of echo quilting each Sue... The red work ones will be trapunto'ed. Hmmm, maybe I could quilt folds into apron and such?
