Do you match your thread to the fabric when piecing or do you use a neutral color? I am working on a block sailboat pattern using bright primary colors. Then when I quilt should I use a neutral or pick one of the colors? Thanks guys y'all are always a lot of help.

It all depends on what you want to do, and how you want it to look. I have done both.....used neutrals and matched the fabric.

I use neutrals, but I know people that match their colors. It is just easier for me to purchase one color instead of many colors.

An amish friend of mine told me that if you are using a range of colors, a gray thread is the best 'blender'--if your colors are dark use a dark gray, medium use a medium gray, light use a light gray.

I use neutrals. Sometimes if I have a bobbin loaded in matching thread then I will take the time to find the matching spool and use that. My theory is to sew with the neutral until the bobbin is empty. I hate having partial bobbins floating around.

I like to use neutrals to piece. Works well for me.

I piece with neutrals. If you don't want the quilting to show, I'd suggesst a monofilament thread.

When I started to do piecing, I tried to match the color - exactly.

Then when I was piecing a scrap strip quilt, I started to use up all the thread on the partially filled bobbins. With multi-prints, it doesn't seem to matter much what color thread I used.

My usual suggestions - practice on scraps and then pull on the seams to see what - if any - thread is showing.

If I'm sewing a white to a dark, it seems to work out better to use a darker color instead of white. The white would show up on the dark, but the dark didn't seem to show up on the white - or at least it didn't seem as obvious.
