Christmas fabric quilt ideas
I love Christmas fabric, especially Christmas red and Christmas green. I have a tub full of fabric in red and green prints, also some gold and cream. I need to start using it up and would appreciate some pattern ideas - scrap quilts , Christmas quilts etc.
Thank you. |
I saw a quilt picture on Pinterest this week that I saved to my pictures. I can't post it here of course but it was made with jelly roll strips and it was interlocking Christmas trees. From a distance, the trees look like chevrons. It would make a nice everyday quilt done in green and golds or Christmas in red and green. The pattern was in a PDF but my picture hasn't got the site, sorry.

Some time ago looking online at back issues of many quilt magazines covers there was one with bigs bows looked nice.
|
Thank you for the suggestions. I will check out Pinterest and quilt covers.
|
Found it! You can Google -Wander through the Woods quilt pattern by Hope Nelson.
|
Thanks Tartan - great pattern!

Tula Pink has a free pattern for a "birdseed quilt." It's an orange peel pattern mixed with flying geese. I used my Accuquilt GO to cut the orange peels. I'm working on that with Christmas fabric.
|
Although this is a Christmas quilt, I did it in more Christmassy colors. It is REALLY quick to cut & sew

Thank you to Doggramma, Paper princess for your suggestions. I like both of those.

I did a somewhat scrappy Christmas leymone star quilt that I use as a table topper during the season. I use it on the coffee table in my LR. Happy coincidence that it just hangs over the edge by about 1.5" so makes a great top/centerpiece for the holidays.
No help with the pattern as it was in a book I borrowed from the library a number of years ago. If you are interested, PM me and when I dig out the Christmas decorations I can take a photo for you. |
Thank you - Your post about the Lemoyne star led me to check out Pinterest for star quilts and I found a few Christmas scrappy star quilts for inspiration.
|
Here's a scrappy one that uses the colors you have

Thank you - That should use up some fabric.
|
Since I have a habit of buying Christmas fabric just because I like it, I have over 250 different fabrics. What I did was cut 2 - 6in. squares of each one and made the patchwork quilt. It was fun, it was quick, and I get to see the various fabrics.

I'm collecting red and green fabrics to do a Christmas Log Cabin. I saw a picture on Pinterest that inspired me.
|
Some of Bonnie Hunter's scrap quilt patterns (quiltville.com) work well in Christmas fabrics. I made a Roll Roll Cotton Boll in reds, greens, and neutrals that looks good.
|
I made a crazy quilt with Christmas fabric and just love it. My friend made one with the decorative stitching on the seams and it is just beautiful.

I made a house quilt with christmas charm squares. Just snowballed the top corners, put 2-3 in a row and interspaced with a solid white. Sashing in between the rows, and in the blank spaces I quilted trees. It was really simple.

I cut my Christmas fabrics into strips for a curvy log cabin.

Hi Joan. DonnaPea just posted a Christmas Bow Tie Quilt a few days ago, and it looked great, plus a good way to burn through some Christmas fabric. If you put Bow Tie in the search bar, you'll find it.
|
Always see very beautiful Christmas quilts in the log cabin design!
|
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I now have a lot of ideas. SooBDo I found the Bow Tie quilt and love it. Checked out Bonnie Hunter's site and she had several patterns that would work, including a short post on a Bow Tie quilt.

Have you tried looking through quilt magazines and books for designs you like, no matter what colors are used? I am working on two wall quilts of Christmas prints, both of which were shown in browns in the library books where I found them. Several larger pieces went into pillowcases for a craft sale. The next one I'm going to piece of Christmas scraps is a "scrappy star", which alternates hourglass and plain squares with the colors laid out so you see stars that share points between them.

exploding block Missouri Star quilt company I am making a quilt using this method and my christmas scraps. You will need two 4 inch squares and one 5 inch square of contrasting colors and or values for each small block, finishes at 6 1/2 inches. You will need 48 such finnished blocks to get the equivalent for twelve 12 inch finnished blocks. I have the same colors you described plus some black and some dark blue. also my fabric vary from vintage to modern. this looks so promising. I am close to finishing all 48 blocks and will hopefully start sewing them together soon. So easy and so much fun. Great stash buster. I'll try to find this thread back once I have a top sewn together. Here is what came up when I googled exploding block quilts. This should give you a feel for how some colors combinations look like. https://www.google.com/search?q=expl...ng+block+quilt |

This one has cremes or white, reds and greens. I'm making it in a class this next Monday. Will use up lots of those reds and greens you have. |
If you are interested in a small project (not a quilt), google Scandanavian Stars. They are fun to make.
|
I saw this on facebook and then saw the same thing on Bonnie Hunter's facebook page; you can make Woven Stars also know as Scandinavian Stars for neat little items as ornaments or use as 'bows' on packages. They use 4- 3.5" strips that are 12.5" long. Google it, I love them.
|
Thank you for the links. I checked them all out - so many ideas. I saw a YouTube video for the Scandinavian stars and there were a couple of other videos for fabric ornaments which I particularly liked. I will try and link.

My link didn't work so will try again.

Here is another idea Big Star Block I made just one block. the block I made is made with 5 inch charms not the 10 inch squares as in the video. when you use 5 inch charms the unfinished block with be 1/8 of an inch shy of 11 1/2 inches. |
Thanks QuiltnNan! I've had this in my wish pile for a few months now. I've got to make that quilt!
|
Thank you Annaquilts for your pictures. I love both those blocks. I watched Jenny and the exploding block and it looks fun and addicting.
