Christmas Ornament Ideas
Last year I started making an ornament for each one of my grandkids so they have them when they get older and can decorate their own tree. I am looking for new ideas and some pictures would be great.
Thanks Karen |
Karen - Have you seen the ornaments posted on the 3rd Annual Christmas Ornament swap board. There are some really creative ones on there and they are all so beautiful! I am sure you can find something there. Good luck.

If you are looking to sew paper pieced ones, there is a source you can use for tree ornaments. The Quilters Newsletter Magazine site has a current project called Christmas Flag. It is for making an American Flag with rows of tiny PP squares. The patterns are really cute and I am going to do a few as ornaments. You go to the magazine main site and click Web Extras. Look on the drop down menu for Christmas Flag and click on it. There are free PP patterns for the blocks until Nov. 6.

My guild has a annual Christmas ornament swap. One thing I have made is stars from the center bits of Mariner's Compass patterns.
|
I will be watching this thread, I want to make quilted ornaments for my quilty friends :)
|
I do the same thing, make ornaments or Christmas something each year and am running out of ideas. I did make Christmas balls that looked quilted though I can't remember what it is called, you fold the circle fabric in half then bring two ends to a point and pin into a ball with each layer overlapping and meeting half way from other side done the exact same way. Hummmm, I have no idea where to even tell you where the instructions for it are. Anyone else know what I am talking about?

Go on YouTube and search for quilted ornaments. There are some pretty ones, and they are so easy and simple.

Folded Hexagon ornaments
This makes a nice ornament. I taught this to my quilter club and most found it very easy to do. Here is the page for the links to the tutorials.
nyquilter.com/tutorials.php I made 2 and sewed them back to back with buttons in the center on both sides Can't get a picture posted from my iPad for some reason. |
Here's a tutorial for the Cathedral Window ornament...really nice!

Thanks Karen |
Two cathedral window squares joined together at the sides and the bottom with a ribbon attached on the top make a cute hanging pocket, and you can fussy cut the inserted fabric to make them different and personalized for everyone.

I like to make folded star ornaments. I'm sure the instructions will be easily found on the net.
|
This past week I ran across an idea to make Christmas ornaments with Christmas fabric scraps cut into somewhat small pieces and decoupaged on clear glass ornaments. I am planning to precut scraps and help my DGKs make some next week. When they are done I will sprinkle them with glitter, put the little metal top back in place and tie a ribbon to hang them with. Unfortunately, I cannot relocate that idea. It was a wonderful quilt shop that gave lots of ideas.

My son and i always did this.
Take a clothspin pull it apart you need two, put tog flat side tog ant pointy side up for antlers glue on eye and a sparkly red pompom nose. make sleds out of tounge depressors. Felt stufffed stars with name emb. On them Mini teddy bears, mittens stockings, all with names. Orgami fabic. cut fabs into 2" zuares, poke into stryofoam balls...really cute, in fa orite or school colors. |
I have yet to do quilted ornaments but I do embroidered ornaments. I use felt, cut a shape, pick a design specific to each child;ie, sport they play, special interest they have, etc. and embroider it on the felt. I add their name and the year. I sew the embroidered felt to a matching felt back, stuff it and put a ribbon trim hanger on it. They love them.
I use to just find an ornament, put their name on them and the date. I started the felt ornaments 2 years ago and one DIL told me later that she wanted the same type of ornament every year for them!! The older kids are impressed that Nana/Moms actually made them!! I do something similar for my nieces/nephews. I might think of a way to add a quilty piece to them this year!! |
I do something a little different, we have a family craft night where we make our own ornaments each year. We've made foam nutcrackers, cinnamon snowflakes, beaded candy canes, etc. We put our name and the year somewhere on each one. When my kids are grown and gone, they will have a collection of ornaments they've made over the years to decorate their own trees with. I have ornaments that my mother and grandmother made when my mom was a child.
One year we did one that turned out so disastrously, it's become comic legend in our family! Let's just say glue and glitter were involved, and I was worried that Bart Simpson would make a huge mess, but it turned out that Homer was the one I had to worry about! |
Quilted Christmas Ornament (No Sew). If you go yo YouTube they have an ornament that I think is easy and beautiful. You can really personalize it to each grandchild.
|
The pointy folded Christmas ornament is called the Pine Cone, I believe.

This idea is for a garland. My sister made yo yo's than sewed them together side to side, put a button in the center to hide the hole. She did these with fabric that was red with some white on it and white with some red on it alternating the yo yo's. It looks so stinking cute on the tree along with her little redwork ornaments and the 100 snowflakes I crocheted.

Thanks for all your ideas, I'm still watching this thread

I have made bells using yo yo's in different sizes and putting a christmas bell on the bottom one, with some file folder
circle in the bottom one for stablility, and a ribbon on top for the loop; you can make Christmas trees two doing the same thing with different greens for the top part and a gold start sewed on top with ribbon loop. I love homemade christmas ornaments, I don't have many balls on my christmas tree. Our guild had ornament exchange several years and many of those are gone now, love the memories. |
Last year our family of four boys and spouses and girlfriends ages 14-29 painted blank ornaments from Hobby Lobby with acrylic paints we had left over from various projects over the years. Everyone had a great time and we came up with a few masterpieces, everything from traditional Christmas trees, landscapes, geometric shapes, and caricatures. The fun time spent together was even better than the keepsakes.

There is a nice one on today's tuts made by mdall. It would be an easy one to make. Thanks mdall for posting it.

Christmas Ornament ideas - Paper Pieced Santas
I just finished these today!

Do you want them made only from fabric or do you work in other mediums as well? Such as polymer clay, and other craft objects?
I've been making ornaments since 1977 for my kids, and now grandkids. My DD loved them as for years her tree as a young adult was with the ornaments I had made her. This year they have a 9 foot tree, so they may have to buy a few. lol I'll be watching this thread as well to learn more. When I find my pics I'll share a few. Also check out Pinterest for ideas. LOTS of things on that site.

Years ago I used lollipop molds and plaster of paris to make ornaments...We painted them and then sprayed them with clear spray paint...After putting the plaster in the mold insert the string or ribbon you are using for a hanger before it hardens.
|
Are you talking about using a styrofoam ball, pressing the fabric into the ball, and it looks quilted?
