Churn Dash Block
 
I'm trying to find cutting instructions for a Churn Dash Block, I need it to be 8.5 inches. I've been looking all over the web and have just about gone crazy looking.

8.5 inches finished or unfinished size?

Put a ruler on a piece of paper. Draw the block. Measure the segments, add half an inch for seam allowances except for the half square triangles. For the half square triangles add an inch to the *finished* measurement and square up.

This block is a 9-patch with equal-sized segments, so normally you will find it only in sizes with an increment of 3 -- 12 inches, 9 inches, 6 inches, etc. See this explanation:

I did find the following tools that are supposed to allow you to design a block of any size using specialized rulers, but have never tried this myself:
