I'm a newbie (only been quilting since last year). I want to make a quilt using a Churn Dash Pattern. My question is can all blocks be the same or should all blocks be different colors. I'll be putting sashing between each block.

You can do them all the same color, or you can do them different. It is just personal preference.

It's your quilt -- you can decide! Using just a few colors makes things easier and is restful for the eyes, but very scrappy quilts with many, many fabrics are also great -- they look warm and welcoming. |
I think that is totally personal choice. All different colors uses up lots of scraps. I've seen both ways and they are equally beautiful.

There really is no wrong way. But I do agree with Leslie. Every fabric you use requires another decision at the shop, and more decisions while sewing about what goes with what in each block. And finally, more decisions as you set the blocks together about what goes next to what. So the fewer fabrics, the easier it becomes.
I started quilting by making a crazy quilt, and it took me 2 years to finish it. So many fabrics, so many decisions! Next I made a log cabin, then a few 9patch quilts and 4patch quilts. I used very limited palettes for those, some plaids, some calicoes, and a muslin or white background. And wow, they were lots easier than that first one. My advice would be to look at some churn dash quilts and decide what you like best. There are some quilts made in this pattern on the Churn Dash page of Quilters Cache: http://www.quilterscache.com/C/Churn...ock_Page2.html Some are scrappy and some are controlled with just a few fabrics. See which ones you like best. If you trully love the scrappy look, go for it. Good luck with it. I hope you have fun and love doing it! |
