Civil War era question?

I am doing a round robin with two gal pals & we are all doing civil war era patterns & fabrics. My question is "would hand embroidery be appropriate as a border for that era"? I am trying to come up with a border and I keep coming back to some embroidered flowers (the main body of the quilt is baskets) Maybe some of you have a better idea?!?!?! BTW these are 'miniature' quilts.

only if it were for a wedding quilt. During that era things like embroidery thread were not readily available and would have been very costly.

Thanks for the info... auditioning a churn dash block now, but having trouble with the math on that one.

When changing the size of a block, I find it very helpful to use graph paper.
