Now there are more then 1 kind of CW fabric . There is fabric that is listed as CW and it looks like CW but it only looks like it it is not repro. Then there is CW reproduction which is an actual copy of a fabric used during the 1800's. Remember people didn't go out and buy fabric during the war 1860-1866 there was a shortage so the fabric that was used was fabric from before those times. The fabric in a TRUE CW quilt made during the war was fabric that they had on hand. Bonnie Blue quilt shop has it listed as CW fabric but when I spoke to them it is not repro. Google civil war reproduction fabric and there are a lot listed. Fabric.com has CW but it is not just listed as CW some is listed by designer or 1800's, I am not sure if theirs is repro's you will have to check that out. BEST place is Abrahams Lady Gettysburg Pa they have an on line store. They are next expensive and they have CW repro's what better place to get CW fabric then right where the biggest battle of the war took place. I am a CW nut. So it depends one which way you want to go just the look or a real repro. If you want a real repro then you have to go all the way like every reenactor and living historian does, it is all done by hand. piecing and quilting and none of this coated cotton thread it is uncoated cotton or silk thread. I made a complete reproduction CW quilt and there is nothing like the look that it has. yes I am patting myself on the back.

so how do we know if it is repro?? just ask? and why do they listit as CW if it is not an actual repro?

Just asking most times doesn't help because they don't know as in the Joann post about a ham. You need to fine a shop or designer that you know knows their stuff. Then also there were different prints from the North or South. It is very involved but my personally feeling is why not interchange North and South who is too say that before the war someone didn't travel to visit someone and buy fabric in the area they were visiting. The quilts also changed from class to class. The slaves wouldn't have the same fabric as they had at the big house. Then there would be the difference between slave owners some were more generous then others. Slave quilts were also tied they were meant to be used and were often needed in a hurry. The beautiful quilts that still exsist today were show quilts. the quilts that took forever to make. In the south the wives and daughter would sew the afternoon away with their tiny stitches and lovely handwork. So you have to read and research and decide what you want in the way of CW and go from their. OH and just an after thought the slave quilts were filled with cotton but the cotton often was not carded it still have the hard prickly outside on it.

Actual repro v. tribute is a fun issue. You could fake it without purchasing officially designated "reproduction" fabrics. Wartime is make-do-time.

There's a great shop in Temecula for CW fans. Maybe you could find a shop in your area.

I know aren't they yummy but they are not repo's as per Sherly at Hancock of Paducah. The just look like CW but they are listed CW. I like the ones with Lincoln but they would be just for fun to have a quilt like that or even a wall hanging for someone who likes the CW. Thanks for sharing Loretta. It is nice to see others have my interest not just in quilting but of the CW also.

I buy from reproduction fabrics.com. Margo, the owner, is an expert on reproduction fabrics. If she says it's civil war reproduction then it's authentic. The movie industry consults her a lot when it comes to period films. There was a great CW film a couple of years ago (can't remember the name but as good as it was it didn't be come a block buster) for which she supplied the quilts. And if you have questions, you can get answers. I try to stop there whenever we go to Montana :D

I believe the movies you are speaking of is Gods and Generals along with the movie Gettysburg. Even though historically not accurate both movies are very good. They are based on the books by Michael Shaara Killer Angels and Gods and Generals. Also by Sharra was the Last Full Measure. All 3 are must read books for the Civil War buff.

Some years ago I found a very large woman's OLD dress
in an estate sale. It looked like it had been worn and washed
for a hundred years. It had small pinkish brown roses on a cream background.

For my sister's Civil War Reenactment clothes I used my Grandmother's old sun bonnet as a pattern and made her one. I had enough fabric left over to make her a waist apron
with small ties.

She said it looked so authentic that she could have sold it several times over!

Look in all the odd spots such as estate sales and antique shops. Just might find what you want.
