Which Class Would You Choose to Enter This Quilt?

1 Attachment(s)
I want to enter my Summertime Charades quilt in the State Fair of Virginia Quilt Show. I don't have a clue which class to choose so I thought I would ask y'all your opinion.

Class 6006: "Appliqued by machine" (it is mostly appliqued)

Class 6007: - "Mixed Techniques - both piecing and applique are used to develop the quilt top..." (the sashing is pieced)

Class 6008: "Wall Hanging or Art Quilt not intended for use as bedding." (this category would be appropriate too since it is a large wall quilt... there are too many fragile embellishments to ever wash it)

Very cute! I would go with the appliqued by machine category since that is the first thing I noticed.

Tartan 08-24-2015 05:46 PM

It has great eye appeal so I would enter it in 6008 wall hanging or art quilt. If you have entered before, I might go with the category that has the fewest entries but there is no way to tell before hand.

MadQuilter 08-24-2015 05:53 PM

I'd go with the 6008 art quilt category. It is cute.

Prism99 08-24-2015 06:21 PM

All of the blocks are machine appliqued, so that is the category I would think it belongs in best. There are no pieced blocks in the quilt, so I don't think it fits in the mixed category. Does the wallhanging/art quilt category have a size limitation? Hard to tell from your photo, but it might be large for that category.

PaperPrincess 08-24-2015 06:33 PM

Unless there is a size limitation for wall quilts, I would go with that. 6008.
That is a darned cute quilt!

DresiArnaz 08-24-2015 08:23 PM

That is very cute and quilted so beautifully!

DOTTYMO 08-24-2015 10:44 PM

Very unusual. I'd go with applique as every block has applique picture on. It will get lost in some art sections.

Trapunta 08-25-2015 02:26 AM

I vote for applique. You did a great job! Good luck at the show.

I agree with Prism99. There are no pieced blocks in your quilt. There usually is size limitation so be sure to check on that. What is the size of the quilt?? I would check the applique category to see what size your quilt would be submitted. Usually there are various size subcategories.

ckcowl 08-25-2015 03:22 AM

I too would go with the applique category.

JENNR8R 08-25-2015 03:40 AM

There are no size limitations in any category. All quilts are accepted.

If a quilt is categorized incorrectly, it will not be judged.

If they receive too many quilts in any category, only the prize-winning quilts will be displayed.

This fair is held two hours away from my home. It would cost me $1 entry, gas, and two days of vacation to drop it off and pick it up myself. I'd have to make a third trip to see the fair with my friends.

They allow quilts to be mailed but the cost increases to the shipping of the quilt to the fair, a $30 entry fee, and the quilt may not even be displayed!

For these reasons I really want to pick the correct category. They offer no suggestions on which category to choose. Their suggestion was to ask a quilt shop for their opinion on the category. I thought y'all would give more feedback.

Opinions seem evenly divided between the applique category and the wall quilt category. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is having trouble deciding.

Funny I should find this now. I just asked a question about classes earlier. Good luck with your quilt (I have no opinion) and hope it wins a ribbon for you. Such a cute quilt.

sash 08-25-2015 07:24 AM

It is a very cute quilt. Hope it wins for you no matter what.

I'm fair superintendent of our quilting division a the state regional fair. When someone doesn't know what category to enter their quilt and it could go in different ones, I tell them to pick a category that has the least entrants!

I don't know that either. I've never entered or attended the state fair before. What is your experience with the number of entries in a category?

Onebyone 08-25-2015 08:49 AM

The number of entries in each category varies too much year to year. Usually the person will ask what category should their quilt be in and if there are several to choose from, I or the other workers will always tell them which one has the least entered. It's not a big secret and shouldn't be. When someone enters a quilt in one category and it can be in another I always tell them if the other category has less entries if they want to change. Entering a quilt in a fair should be fun and everyone should have the same 'in the know' as anyone else.

This is such a cute quilt. Good luck! I was so excited when I saw your post. I will be in that area but bummed when I realized we fly home 10 days before the fair starts. Fairs! Quilts! What could be better!

dunster 08-25-2015 11:28 AM

I think 6008 would be my choice. It is a very cute wall hanging!

GagaSmith 08-25-2015 11:37 AM

Is there a way to contact someone in charge at the fair and tell them your dilemma and ask their advice. I think it's a beautiful appliqued wall hanging so either category would be appropriate. Good luck!

quiltmouse 08-25-2015 01:35 PM

just adorable. Lovely work

CanoePam 08-25-2015 02:35 PM

Think of which group will have the best opportunity for you. For example, in machine appliqué, you may very well compete with Baltimore Album quilts. In a piecing/appliqué combo class you will be competing with quilts that have much more piecing. I would recommend the art quilt category.

Maggie Mendes 08-25-2015 03:09 PM

Love the quilt and the appliqué.

I like the way you think. I was worried about a possible Baltimore Album competitor... a wall hanging it is!

lynnie 08-25-2015 05:34 PM

i'd go with 6008, very pretty quilt. good luck

carolynjo 08-26-2015 04:55 AM

That is a darling quilt and good luck on your entry.

Bubbie 08-26-2015 07:18 AM

This is so cute. You have done a great job. I would think it should be 6008 Wall Hanging or Art Quilt. Good luck it looks like a winner to me.

That is an excellent suggestion.

What a great quilt. I love it! I would think the applique category. Great quilting!

maryellen2u 08-26-2015 06:56 PM

I really have no idea what category because they don't have one that is "Darned cute"! I think it should win something for sure: originality, eye appeal, quilting, style on and on!

celwood 08-27-2015 04:46 AM

I would also go with class 6006. Very cute quilt you should do well in the quilt show

red-warrior 08-27-2015 03:58 PM
