Is there a class/technique you've ever tried that just didn't work for you? What was it? What didn't work?

Most classes I have LOVED, but I did take a machine quilting class at the Knoxville AQS show last year that was abismal!!! The instructor did not even tell the students to pull up the bobbin thread! I taught the lady next to me SOOOO much more than the paid instructor. I took the class to hone my quilting, not teaching skills.

Watercolor!! No, not in quilting, in painting.
In quilting I don't take class that I don't think I'll like. ooopps, maybe curved piecing---it didn't work for me at the time I took the class but I've since learned how to do it better. Not well enough that I'd want to do a Drunkards Path or anything like it but I can do it I have to.

I have never taken a class.

I took a class on making a rug that was a fold and stitch kind of thing. Half of the women in the class had their sewing machines over heat because of all the stitching and the instructor wasted lots of time by not having us pre-cut the strips. I was glad I learned a new technique, but not sure when I'll ever use it again.

Machine applique. Just didn't like it and so back to hand applique.

I took a class on FMQ. I don't think at this point I have the knack nor the patience for it. First, I'm not insinuating in any way that the instructor is responsible for my lack of talent, however, I was sorely disappointed with the instructor. I see where she's at a disadvantage with so many different personalities, but as the "consumer", I'm paying to learn something...not to be an expert. There was ample time (an all day class) for her to do one-on-one, as in show-me-where-I'm-going-wrong, yet she was much more attentive to a few that were either "good" or had had her as a instructor before. The upside, I at least have a small knowledge of it that I didn't have before.

Come to think of it, my very first class on basic quilting, the instructor was happy to sit at the front and knit while we sewed. I learned how to chain piece, but not how to match up seams. Frustrating. The top is unfinished, but I'm leaving it as is, wonky seams and all. Eventually I'll finish it.

I took a mystery quilt class and the cutting instructions were for 10" strips (I think). I decided that I would use some raspberry and chartreuse fabric that I had been collecting for several years in my attempt to do some stashbusting. I was rocking along and about halfway through the class, the instructor revealed the quilt. It was 2 1/2" squares (similar to a watercolor quilt). I was mortified...my beautiful fabric cut into tiny pieces so that no one could see the beauty of the fabric!!

I decided to stop what I was doing and ended up making hourglass blocks instead. I was heartbroken but it taught me a valuable lesson. I just don't think I can relinquish control and do anything that is a mystery ever again. I want to know the outcome so that I can choose my fabrics accordingly... :-(

Good Morning, any! and I do mean any! time I've ever tried to do any type of pattern? My corners? or where they connect never matched............so I do crazy quilting LOL, but this is a beautiful quilt too..........and I use Log cabin idea? only do the whole quilt top like that.......sorry that means I'm not a true quilter I know........but I love the art I see in the rest of you.
