Once I had a tool to clean my cutting board but has disappeared HOWEVER, I remember reading different things to clean the board BUT remember none of them....can anyone help me??????

Welcome from Ireland. I use a strip of masking tape.
I use a lint roller...one of those with the sticky paper on it.
Welcome from Louisiana. When mine got bad I asked for a new one for Christmas. I got 2 large ones. Love them!
A nylon scrubbie will work to clean it too.
I use the bath net scrubbie!! You can get them for less than a $ at Wal-Mart or dollar store.
Welcome from Florida Betty. I'm not worried about cleaning mine, I just wish there was a good way to "renew" one...Mine is pityful....Guess I'll have to buy one with a coupon the next time I go to Joannes.... :-)
I've had good look with just a damp washcloth, scrubbing in circles over the surface.
This what I have used. I have a self-healing mat now and less probs.

Welcome!
i just use a damp rag. |
I received this from a group today. It was information provided by a lady who spoke to a representative of the Olfa corporation. This is what he told her.
"He told me the maintenance is simple: #1. after cutting a project (or at least once a month), wipe off any fuzzies or debris from the mat #2) then wipe down the mat with a mild soap and water solution - dish soap in warm water is perfect and a sponge with a scrubbie side dipped into the soapy water and wrung out well will really do the job #3. wipe dry." |

I use a nylon scrubbie or the edge of my 5" inch plexiglass ruler. That works really well and is tough enough it doesn't chip or break. Once a month or so, I use a mild soap and water and dry off.
A nylon scrubber is my choice too.
HelloOOOoooo... you paid for 2 sides! Turn it over, voila, a new mat! TaDa! Please note the time, a glass of wine!
Damp rag
Mine was over 7 years old and shot. I wanted a new one. For my B-day my Mother in law gave me a new one and it is the big one! Self healing. Love it! She and I are the only sewers in the bunch. She is giving me her Janome embroidery machine when she is done with it. Exciting, except it's in the will. I'd rather have her alive longer than Wanting the machine! LOL....

Those microfiber cloths do a really good job cleaning up the fuzz when they're wet!
I save scraps of warm and white/natural to wipe off my board. They seem to pick up the strings and really help clean out the "grooves".
Pam! You didn't pour me one, too??? Shame on you!
Hello from Betty
Thanks for the quick reply...it was the warm & natural that got stuck in the mat so I will see what helps..you gals are great..I'll remember you when I have another problem...Happy Quilting |
That's funny, just this week I had to clean the warm & natural off of my mat. I wiped it first with a damp rag & after it dried I used the lint roller, then the damp rag again. It worked great. The batting really got stuck in those grooves.
I wondered what Warm and Natural was. Now I know. I've never cut batting on my mat or with a rotorary cutter. I just use scissors for that. However some fabrics can gum up a mat too.

If I am just trying to remove the little pieces of scrap materials, then I a 6x6 piece of batting. I simply just swipe it across my cutting board and it picks up all the pieces of materials/loose threads. If it needs to be cleaned, then I use a soft rag dipped in water/vinegar solution mix and wipe over my board. You might tend to think this would make the board smell like vinegar but it doesn't!! :) |

Through a chance attempt, I have found that by rubbing a fine sandpaper all over the mat (that is the white one) it is almost as good as new. As a tole painter, I understand how fine sandpaper will smooth wood so I thought, what the heck, and gave it a try. It is wonderful! Does a great job and DOES NOT remove the lines or printing. Removes all those annoying burrs too.
a board scraper.
I use a plastic pot scraper I found at (I think it was ) Bed Bath and Beyond.
How about some poly batting. It surely picks up a lot of lint and threads on mine, dust too.
Great info.
I use a nylon scrubbie.
One of the vendors at tne NQA show gave a talk on washing your cutting mat in the bathtub with midld dish detergent and letting it dry completely while laying flat. He said it makes the mat last longer.

I too use a nylon bath scrubbie. The one I have has a loop to hang it so it's always handy next to my cutting mat. Just scrub around in circles and presto....LINT IS GONE.
Thanks for all of the information!
Thank you for the information. God bless. Penny

You're supposed to clean them? Wow, learn something new every day! LOL. Well, I do run a lint roller over them when they get fuzzy.
I used a piece of window screening...it got all the fuzzies (batting, etc.) out of the grooves.
