I was just approached by a fiend with a question about cleaning a quilt. He has this old quilt that was on their bed with a cedar chest against it. Apparently the oils from the cedar spreaded into the quilt. He tried to wash it before asking anyone and the stain is now set. Is there anything anyone can suggest to clean it? It was a wedding gift that he will hate to loose.

What a shame. Did he air dry it or did he run it through the dryer?

The only recommendation I found for removing oil is moot because the item has been washed. If he air dried it, I would try the new spray and wash with color-safe bleach and wash it again. If it was dried in the drier, I think he's stuck.

SOme of the other articles recommend Dawn dishsoap first then the pretreater, then a wash. It's worth a try - can't get much worse.

This has worked on antique fabrics stored on a wooden shelf for several years. The resulting orange stain was almost entirely removed. It is a "cure" from Ralph and Terry Kovel, the antique experts. Mix one part white vinegar and four parts warm water, soak, rinse, repeat if necessary. Dry in the sun if possible.
