(I absolutely loved the border wallpaper but when my daughter was about 12 months old or so she woke up from her nap and decided to peel it while waiting in her crib :-( )

Well here goes ...

I ventured into the sewing room to take BEFORE photos. New at this on-line stuff so hope I got these uploaded to Flickr correctly.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/3007721...7623106160616/

It's amazing that the photos look so much worse than I thought the room looked. Hopefully tomorrow I will feel up to be moving a bit more to start cleaning-up.

Yesterday I catalogued all 342 of my magazines. Today I started on the books, I'm at 103 from the two bottom shelves, three more shelves to go. Then I'm going to make a list of all my embroidery threads.

I might actually get organized before I go back to work on Feb 1st, but how do you keep it organized when sewing?? :?:
I so want to be like Eleanor Burns and throw stuff over my shoulder and have someone else clean it up.

dannypanny 12-31-2009 12:58 AM

hi watterside you sure are brave... went to the address site you gave us. I love all your ingenious ideas on how you use items in ways that are different from what they were meant to be used for. Very clever and creative. I have been tidying up my sewing room for I don't know how many months and I am still not finished yet. I have been transferring all my stuff from inside the house to the outside rooms. I also do a lot of other things i.e. cards, decoupage, sewing etc and so I have to find a place for all the paraphernalia that all my hobbies have. have a great 2010. Thanks for trying to get us motivated - I am not a procrastinator, but I need motivation.... :O) ciao

bluebird 12-31-2009 03:16 AM

But if we get organized we will never find what we want or make such beautiful quilts any longer

cpfrog 12-31-2009 06:09 AM

Hellooooooo,
Sure I'm with you... I need some incentive, but can we start Jan 2nd?

I'll try for before/after pics, but am new to this board...soooo....

Good luck in advance with yours. Has anyone else joined the annual clean-up?
Regards,
cpfrog

cpfrog 12-31-2009 06:11 AM

Of course we will quilt again... we may even find UFO's that are almost finished!!!! :-))

Quilting with a friend will keep you in stitches.

judyq 12-31-2009 06:13 AM

I want to join!!! I'll take photos tonight if you can help me upload them. I have started by putting all my Christmas fabric in a bin and that still sits on the chair! What a grand idea and this will help motivate me to 'git er dun'!!! LOL

LINANN 12-31-2009 06:14 AM

This is good! We all need the support.

beckyw 12-31-2009 06:23 AM

I'm in because I need help.

Bevanger 12-31-2009 06:34 AM

i'm almost afraid to ask cuz i don't want anyone to think bad of me, but if while cleaning your rooms and you wanna thin out your stash can you please send my way? I so enjoy making scrappy quilts and the more variety of fabrics i have, the more i love it. I just can't buy fabrics anymore. But PLEASE do not think bad of me for asking. its embarrassing enough.

Emjay 12-31-2009 06:37 AM

I'll join you. I'll even take "before" pix.

Thanks for the challenge.

ldwyer10934 12-31-2009 06:42 AM

It's that time of year to make resolutions and I think that organizing my stash should be one the top ones. Hopefully doing this together will give us the incentive to get it done.

Emjay 12-31-2009 06:44 AM

Hey! your sewing area looks pretty good.

watterstide 12-31-2009 06:44 AM

Will be sending scraps your way this weekend or monday..

you can start anytime you want..january is just a time when i stay out of the cold and snow and i just thought we could all use some support, while getting something done!
No RULES! just try to devote a little time each day or week..the only reason i thought pictures would be nice..is you will be able to see the difference..sort of make you feel like your accomplishing something..a little bit at a time..

Get ready to post some hints on organizing..what do you find works for you, such as storange ideas, how do you stack or arrange your stash...hits,tips..new uses for old things.

Ellis' Granny B 12-31-2009 06:45 AM

I'm with you. I already started so...."Great minds work alike" I look forward to any suggestions to help. My challenge is , I do not want to drill any holes in the walls because my husband is retiring next year and we may have to sell our lovely home.I pray not. As I speak I do have two closets in this room. If I can only shift all of the clothing into another closet, room or someone elses home... I will do well

weezie 12-31-2009 06:50 AM

HOLY MOLEY! Y'all are going to hate me when you read this, but I can't see how you can find anything if your sewing room is cluttered. (I SAW THE PICTURES!) Everything in my sewing areas has to be in its correct place, because if I reach for something and it's not there, I'm afraid my head will start spinning around and around like Linda Blair's did in "The Exorcist" and I'm just afraid to think of what might start spewing out of my mouth (%%$$##@#%^&*). I'm not phobic, but clutter has always been my enemy. (If I wasn't so old, tired, and lazy, I could hire myself out as an organizer.)

margaret light 12-31-2009 07:16 AM

We are doing our garage today!!! I cannot begin to tell you how truly bad it is, my DD is great for just opening the door and "putting it there"!! We have enlisted the help our my DGS friends so we will see how it goes - personally I think it should all find its way to the dump, de de dump!!! But then I would hear my DD, DGD and DGS saying I need that, that's special. OK so here we go. Bea

rannyof3 12-31-2009 07:18 AM

I started "straightening" my space last week. BIG MISTAKE. It took me all day and it really was organized; WAS, being the operative word. Been playing the last few days and already it doesn't look too good. No pictures. School starts again next week, so won't be sewing again for awhile.....

If I can talk hubby into moving computer to another room, I'd immediately take over the big office desk for my sewing table!! First, I have to enlist his help. Let's see, "Honey, could you please help me move a couple little things out of the sewing room? Like the computer???" How does that sound??? LMAO

watterstide 12-31-2009 07:27 AM

Here is the link to some pictures,
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24578155@N05/sets/

can someone see if they can add pictures for me?

I have also added the link to my Signature line!

Does anyone need help? NO, Not cleaning your area! With pictures!

lacikat 12-31-2009 07:39 AM

Oh, if mine only looked as good as yours. I can't even walk in mine other than to get to the sewing machine and then the piles
are so high it's hard to work on anything!!

brushandthimble 12-31-2009 07:46 AM

I can't seem to figure out how to add photos to Flicker.
I put them into Webshots last night, now tried to add to Flicker. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

2 Doods 12-31-2009 07:51 AM

I am going to be joining in. I can do it. I just have to decide if I really am going to move rooms. I had a craft room when we moved in. Then started my quilting in another room. I would like to clean out the craft room and move my quilting in there. And I would have to <gasp> get rid of some craft things. Moving rooms it is going to be a HUGE project but I think DH would be happier if I did. I would be too-AFTER it is all put together. <<Taking a deep breath>> I know it has to get worse before it gets better-really worse, but a good time to paint a couple of rooms too.

I have some house guests coming this weekend....then I can start. And when I go "off the deep end", I hope you will cheer me on!

hokieappmom 12-31-2009 07:56 AM

I just finished reorganizing my sewing/craft area about a month ago. I'll try to post some pictures too. Can't wait to see all the other good ideas too.

dlf0122quilting 12-31-2009 08:04 AM

I clean mine faithfully every week but someone goes in there and messes it up again for me. Must be a stranger in my house. I would never do that to me. I even re-arranged it and put things where I thought that person would not find them but low and behold, they were left out again. I think I should just gut the room, make it twice the size and add more storage space....maybe I should just rent a whole house just for my sewing and not tell that person where I put it.

Good luck, I will be doing mine right along with ya, gal.

dlf0122quilting 12-31-2009 08:05 AM

I had that same problem with hubby having his computer in the sewing room until I finally convinced him that the lint was not good for the computer and my daughter, the computer geek, agreed with me.

Aretta 12-31-2009 08:11 AM

I am Aretta from WV I joined recently
My sewing room needs cleaned up bad ,I will be glad to join you ,and send me the HINTS

marveenc 12-31-2009 08:14 AM

Hi Waterstide!

Great New Year's resolution. Enjoyed your photos and made sure DH saw them so that he would know there are others like me in the world!

I completed my clean up this month. The turning point was folding and stacking fabrics. I'd saved cardboard for a few months and trimmed it to fit the depth of the book shelves in my "Quilter's Closet". The fabric is now sorted by color - both prints and solids. What a difference from storing fabric in a myriad of plastic boxes!

I think there's a commercial product available, but by making my own I have more $$s for more fabric!

OK, I'll join too. The sewing room was supposed to be cleaned up in Sept; oh, maybe Oct; November? Then it was Christmas and here we are. My problem is that I have to move everything out of the room so I have room to even work. That requires the guest room to be empty and right now I'm babysitting one of my little bottle babies that were adopted. The new family went on vacation for a week and they couldn't take her with them. "Momma" didn't want her to be by herself for a week, she's only 11 weeks old. She seems to be happier today and not hissing at my own three, actually playing with the 8 month old.
I do have a little path that I can walk thru the room and I do know where stuff is but it sure looks bad. I have been doing my sewing in the family room but have been 'requested' to sew in the sewing room so family room stays cleaner. I need all the ideas I can get. Haven't seen anything yet that looks as bad as my room but not confident enough to post pictures. What if no one likes me anymore?
Let's go quilters, I'm right with you (as soon as I get done resting from playing with the kitties).
Wendy

I'll try the 'lint' story!!! Thanks for the idea! :o)

I have towers of plastic storage boxes, stacked up on two walls in my room. Each holds a different color fabric : Red/Pink, Blue, Yellow/Cream, Teal/Aqua, Multi Color Brights, Multi Color Darks, etc. This really helps keep the mess contained. I also have a short plastic drawer tower on wheels, that sits next to my sewing space with a Quilter's Square' n Press on top. Pressing blocks as I sew is easy, I just spin to the right and the iron is right there. I have a long extension cord on my iron, so if I need to use the ironing board, set up behind me, I can easily move the iron back there and then bring it back to the smaller ironing pad. Over the years, I've had to change the size of the boxes as I've gotten more of certain colors, but that's fairly easy to do. I watch until the storage boxes are on sale and make sure to measure what size I need, before heading off to the store. I also put stick on labels on both the cover and the side of the box. Hope this helps.

sunkistmi 12-31-2009 08:23 AM

Marveen, would you be willing to share the pattern or describe your pattern for folding the fabric? My fabric is all in plastic bins but is a bear to work with, especially of you want something at the bottom. I've looked at the commercial ones but that's alot of money. Sure would appreciate any help you would like to give. Thanks.
Wendy
