Which color for binding ... Blue or Red?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi! Trying to decide on binding color for a gift quilt. I'm using American Jane's Provencal fabric which is primary and secondary colors with cream. The backing will be a cream muslin that works well with any of the pindot "solids" that you can see in the design. I'm torn between the Navy Blue and the Red — but I also love the lighter Blue so that's an option.
The quilt is a gift for my sister who loves Navy blue (and all blues) but uses red as an accent color. What say ye all? Attachment 635687 |
Well I think the blue will just blend in with the quilt. But, the red will bring out the red in your blocks.

There is no wrong color with this fun quilt. You have so many good ones in the quilt. What I do when I am undecided, is to tuck about a 5 or 6 inch section of the fabric under the quilted top and take a picture. You can use multiple fabric colors and see which one you really want for the finished product. Another thought....With this quilt, I think a pieced binding with several of the fabrics in the quilt would match the overall fun, sampler look of the quilt. Just try not to let a seam end up in one of the corners.

Either the red or dark blue would look nice. I would do a bleeding test on the binding fabrics since the backing is cream muslin. Take a red scrap and a blue scrap and put then in separate cups of hot water. Squeeze out the water and place the scrap on a white paper towel to dry. If the paper towel remains white then the fabrics are not bleeders.

I think the navy is my choice to frame the quilt.
Voting for a navy value blue. Lovely quilt
Navy would be my choice too.
As much as I love red in everything, I think I would have to go with a navy blue for your quilt. I would audition a few pieces & see which one looks best before making a final decision.
You could due a flange binding with navy as the main fabric with the red as the flange. (accent).
Lighter blue gets my vote.
Many thanks for the ideas and votes! I am leaning toward the Navy ... but piecing the binding with multiple colors or adding a flange would be really interesting approaches. Will probably play around with the blocks a little more and then just make my final decision and go with it. Thanks, again, for the help!

Deborah, I don't think you can go wrong with either the red or navy. I prefer the navy but it's your quilt. It's soooo pretty!!!

Hey, thought you guys might be interested in this ... not sure why I didn't do it sooner! This is a digital test of my layout — which I had created using scanned images of the actual HST blocks — combined with the top binding color choices. I still love the red, but the navy blue is the winner for me. It really pulls the whole thing together, doesn't it?

Both would work but blue would be my first choice.
I’m glad you chose blue. It looks so good
Navy blue would look great.
dkh memphis, that is a great idea to pop it down on the various colors. Navy Blue frames the quilt best to my eye.
Thanks again for the friendly replies! I don't post here often, but when I do, I always enjoy the ideas and support.
When in doubt, always chose red. That's what I think.
Ooops! I see that you've already made your choice. Blue is very nice too! :D |
Audition fabrics against the top....you will be amazed how the right one just pops out at you. I have often found that a fabric I would never have thought would work turns out to be the perfect pick for binding.

Which Color for Binding
You cant go wrong with either color, but I think Navy with a red flange would complement your colorful blocks really nicely. Well done.
Well, now that I've seen 4 options... I say red! Okay, it's a favorite color. But I think it frames it nicely where the blue disappears. Although that is also very nice.
The navy would add a calm finish to the quilt, but the red would add a lively accent. I'm not fond of red myself, but if your sister uses it as an accent, she might like that.
