I have used various brands of color catchers always with Synthrapol which is a dye fixative used by hand dyers. I believe in the double whammie approach.

I have used Color Catcher and Dye Magnet with great results. I have not heard of any one having any problems with them. I even save them and use them for foundation piecing (like string piecing)!

I use shout color catchers.

I never wash my fabrics, and never had a problem with running colors...If the colors are intense in the quilt top I just throw in a extra color catcher...they really do work....

This is just what I needed to read! I am working on the Songahm Star quilt. I have never used solid colors before in a quilt and was afraid of them bleeding. I will remember to use Shout when I'm finished with it.
Thanks a bunch.

If it is new fabric , I would use Retayne to wash it first , that works good to set the color . Then wash again with a Color Catcher, to see if it is still bleeding.

They are great!!! I would recommend washing your fabs in cold water though. The owner of a quilt shop said..."why do you want to prewash fabrics in hot water, when you aren't going to wash in hot water after the quilt is made?" I certainly agree with that.
Last year I purchased the Gallery in Red quilt and washed all the fabrics together with a color catcher...voila, no running of colors. Yes, all the fabrics were reads and whites lol. I figured that would surely put them to the test lol.

Shout color catcher and then Retayne first and color catchers second with hand dyes :D:D:D
