color challenged please help
 

I have been wanting to make a single irish chain quilt. And today MSQC has some things on special and she got me to buy something. (I can only be strong so long :) )

With this Sophie jelly roll, what background fabric do you think? I am anti-white.. so I was thinking about one of the white grunges because they are not pristine and white. Then I also thought about a light gray

Do you guys have any suggestions? I am color challenged Thanks

There's a cream colored Moda grunge that would look good with those fabrics.

When I made my Double Irish Chain I kept changing one of the fabrics - it was driving me crazy and after I got about half way done with making the squares it finally hit me it was the white I chose and not the back-up color to my main fabric. Looking at the jelly roll you chose I would think a very pale off-white, maybe one with a lighter print. Take a few pieces to a quilt shop with a good selection and audition them with other fabrics. You will know it when it pops.

A very light grey or light tan or light cream would probably all be good candidates. Try them and see which one sings.

Otherwise, the fabric in the lower right had corner might also work but then may be a little too busy.

I notice the website you gave shows solids they like with the group. I'd trust their suggestions and go for the oyster or the slate blue if I wanted a darker quilt.

How about a cream or pale blue or pale aqua green that works well with the colors in the collection?

They have coordinating solids but that might be hard if you are trying to do an irish chain because you need contrast, maybe a light gray since it is a muted tone and not bright

I think a tone on tone in the oyster shade would look nicer than a solid with these traditional prints and a traditional pattern like the Irish Chain. I tend to think of solids as being more modern.
